Freeview NZ technical specs do not specify using H.264 on satellite. Upgrade to HD will be using H.265, page 61, 6.11.3.

A lot of the existing older Satellite decoders can't support H265, but pretty much any DVB-S2 device will support H264. It would be great to see a switch to HEVC.

Ok a bit of additional testing and it appears the FTA channels on the Sky transponders are using H264, whist the Freeview only transponders are still MPEG2.

Specifically on 12530H all of the following channels are transmitting using Video 720x576 25fps H264 16:9 anamorphic / Audio 2 channel MPEG2

Sky Open - note multiple audio streams + subtitles.

Surprised to see the audio is still MPEG2 rather than AAC.

Yuck! They are still using anamorphic? Not at least full frame 16:9 on the MPEG4 channels?

I just discovered that the AV button on the Sky black box remote is a shortcut to the signal strength/quality screen. Has that always been the case? I don't think that I've ever even pressed that button before.

My Mum tells me that a few people in her area have had to replace their Freeview box after the satellite switchover. Does that sound right? Surely a new satellite wouldn't necessitate a replacement box?

I think she got hers in 2015, which isn't that long ago, is it? She was saying that apparently Noel Leeming in Ashburton has run out of new Freeview satellite decoders.

Modulation changed from DVB-S to DVB-S2 so it's possible. What is the make and model number of decoder?? Ashburton is also in range of Sugarloaf for terrestrial.

I can't comment on the Ashburton thing as it's second-hand information but I agree with you - I know the Christchurch FM stations used to be received loud and clear in Ashburton.

Anyway, she sent me a pic of her current decoder, looks like it's a Freeview Dish TV S7070R box.

If she does end up needing to replace it, will she need to do this again in 2 years when the satellite changes again? What a pain.

Suggestion on Freeview forum https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=318137&page_no=4 is that S7070r needs to be replaced.

P.S. Modern decoders support DVB-S2 and modern codecs, e.g., H.264 and H.265, so no she won't need to upgrade again.

P.S. Checking specs of S7070r it is only DVB-S.

i would not be surprised. my old freeveiw box is about that age and its now obsolete. i havn't used it for years because of i got smart tv with sat built in.
