https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/commonwealth-games/102983082/tvnz-sending-sports-coverage-back-to-the-dark-ages

Hopefully, this shuts up a few Sky Critics.

I can't *believe* how bad the coverage was. I was able to, fortunately, finally find the squash Coverage online and it was in HD but someone should lose their jobs for failing to provide broadcast coverage of two medal contenders esp since it was back to back. Squash is a fairly niche sport, but tv*NZ* should be ensuring coverage of *NZ* medal contenders.

If you thought Sky ad's were obnoxious at least they don't remove the actual content the way TVNZ does. Score is 6-2 ads come back score is 11-5. Disgraceful.

I can't even begin to imagine how bad RWC coverage will be. I sincerely hope they learn something from this, though it's exceptionally doubtful.

I’m absolutely astounded they chose to do this and show a couple of African boxers on TV instead. How did anyone at TVNZ think that was a good idea?

When asked about it the TVNZ spokesperson avoided giving an explanation and instead gave some nonsense answer about having to juggle multiple sports.

TVNZ should have just dropped every channel to low bitrate 576i and broadcast 2-3 additional CG channels. This would have kept all the people happy who are moaning about losing Coronation St, meanwhile it would have offered more options for CG fans!

Ah, sky not so bad now.  People always bag sky because they seem to forget how bad live/sport coverage is on free to air until it's on free to air.

If RWC goes to tvnz you should expect the same as TVNZ/Spark will want max $$ returns via advertising during the game.

Thats so funny its almost sad.  And the explanation for the poor squash coverage last night was that there are so many events to juggle?  Was that just false news if, in the middle of the games with so many events happening right now, that one event is on two channels at once?

Its been 10 years since TVNZ had the Beijing Olympics.  It seems that, despite the claim that the world has moved on significantly and that some broadcasters havent moved with the times, TVNZ's Commonwealth coverage is about the same as it was 10 years ago but with more ads - and a poor and clunky mechanism for audiences to work out what the events schedule is (and what is actually being shown).

Serious question - if TVNZ are struggling with the Commonwealth Games in 2018, how did they manage in the 1980s before the advent of Sky? I don't quite remember if they did well (or badly) back then.

Well I can tell you one thing, they pulled the equipment and coverage notes out of storage from the 80's and reused them.

They did it by only showing highlights or a select number of sports that people cared about.  Now there are more sports at the games, people have a range of taste and paid TV covered more which people now expect.  TVNZ has tried to fix this by putting things "online" but to watch everything you want to have to jump between tv1, duke, online etc.  I was watching something the other day on tv and then had to go and watch the rest of it on my laptop (which was disappointing) because they switch to another sports.

Also it now just cost more to do sports, people also forget that free to view TV channels have ads, lots of ads where paid tv limits the amount of them (and how long they are) when it's live sports.

Paid tv also does a lot better highlights which is lacking on the current coverage

BBC seem to be able to manage FTA coverage, and without ads fine. So it isn't a PAYTV vs FTA TV thing, as BBC is FTA. The problem TVNZ has, is should they delay coverage when playing ads, so it restarts where they left off, or should they run ads during live coverage and risk people missing parts of the event . I think TVNZ needs to learn how to place ads in parts of the program when there are breaks in the event, which is how they used to do it. Maybe they just don't have the staff knowledge or the staff numbers these days to run live events like this. IMO their coverage has been ok, and in the old days we only had a single channel of coverage, and they flicked between events, which IMO was actually better. This new way of doing it, means we have to flick between channels, and may miss important thigns that happen..

BBC FTA? Hardly. Everybody in the UK has to pay a TV licence yearly to fund it.

IMO TVNZ were more than capable of delivering this properly but the production has been beyond awful which is a shame.

I have made many comments about the technical errors and poor placement of adverts.

I didn't even know until today that they (seem to) stream multiple live events if there are clashes (involving NZ) on the Apple TV App in addition to the three FTA channels! I was switching between the hockey and bowls and they appeared to be streamed ad free. Mind you, I don't notice ads cause I'm not watching the sports that closely. I only care because they are in the Commonwealth (or Olympic) Games...

It's a shame as TVNZ had the resources and capability but the execution has been so poor. I guess that's what happens when you lose all your skilled staff!
