SkyTV have announced that Neon and Lightbox will merge on 7 July or thereabouts. This looks like a move to the Lightbox platform because Neon subscribers lose more in the migration: parental controls have to be reset; viewing history follows a few weeks later; etc.

FAQ's on Neon and Lightbox coming together

As I've just resubscribed to Neon this is a move I'm pleased about because the Neon app on iPad lacks features I need.

And the fact that neon isn't on Apple TV (airplay doesn't count), but lightbox is, much better move.

Sort of already being discussed here, but I guess that started as more specific to its inclusion in the Spark plan.

I posted on their Facebook page, they confirmed there will be an appleTV app, but disappointingly still no 5.1 surround sound. They did say "it is on our technical teams radar", given that broadcast 5.1 has been around for quite some time, I'm guessing their radar came from old soviet stock when the cold war finished.....

Yep, If they had 5.1 I'd be on it in a flash. Even prepared to pay more for it.

For it being on their radar wouldn't hold out much hope as in the Neon FAQ, Do you have 5.1 Audio

"We'd love to be able to offer our TV shows and movies in audio 5.1. We're working towards getting it and we'll be sure to let you know when it's available."

I don't remember the We're working towards getting it bit, but an answer similar to that been up there for years.

From memory the sound from Lightbox though is better then Neons sound output.

I parallel import my HBO content, paying nearly double what I could pay through Neon, but an inferior experience at half the cost is still an inferior experience and doesn't equal good value for me.

Keen to add a Neon sub to the Netflix sub I already have and can't get rid of. It's going to take a sweetener to get me started on Neon. I'm hoping one arrives with the Lightbox merge.

Last time I checked Lightbox did not have subtitles. It's not a deal breaker just feels weird not having it.

Lightbox only offers CC where it's made available to them and theres no legal obligation to the hard of hearing for such platforms in NZ sadly.

Key requirements

  • 5.1 Audio
  • 1080p with a 4K option
  • Support for Android TV compatible devices so APK can be sideloaded on Amazon FireStick
  • Frame rate matching for 24ps playback for films.
  • Pricing below that of Netflix.
  • Full set of Soho content available

If you hunt through the FAQs you can eventually find the proposed price; $14 a month.

Does this mean that we're getting more content for roughly the same price as we were paying before?

with the merging of two services it would imply you're getting more access to more content, with what is available ex neon and ex lightbox.

Are they deal breakers for you, or nice to have?

I'm personally annoyed that Netflix doesn't frame rate match on an Amazon Firestick, but I'm currently living with it.

The deal breaker is no 5.1 audio. If I can watch in 4k and atmos I'd find it somewhere else. I waited for the uhd bluray release for Got season 8. It was worth the wait. Never seen the show as detailed as the uhd version!! I'm also waiting for season 3 of westworld uhd bluray!

These are the minimum requirements to get a sub from me. The fact that they don't have 5.1 sound is just pathetic.

DD ATMOS and HDR would be nice but I live without ATMOS on Netfilx as I haven't upgraded to the latest Shield TV (which is a con as Disney+ works fine).
