Watched Sky's Mr. Fellet and TVNZ's Mr. Ellis on Business Breakfast this morning discussing the new channel to be launched in June. The channel will broadcast programmes from TVNZ's 'vault'. Not much more said than that except that they both agreed that TVNZ and Sky have more in common than not. It seems rather ironic considering TVNZ only recently agreed to re-broadcast TVNZ 6 & 7 on Sky.

This article below seems to be released before the actual announcement made this morning on TVNZ and is lacking in any detail.

It appears that TVNZ's cost modelling indicates they can make money out of this deal and that is why they are getting in bed with Sky. During the interview this morning they emphasised that this is a 'pay TV' deal and it wasn't going to be on Freeview. Rick Ellis said that Sky has approximately 50% of the market and this was a fact they couldn't ignore. TVNZ is in financial difficulty and it appears that revenue is top-of-mind in their offices at the moment.

Seems to go against what TVNZ is meant to do. Mind you, each government seems to change its mind as to what TVNZ is supposed to be doing.

They do seem to be selling old programmes that were funded by tax-payer money to sky, though and not making them freely available. But I guess in a world where TVNZ is expected to be making a profit, they have to leverage all their assets. Not really any worse than flogging them off on DVD.

Seems very strange to me. Feels like it's putting a knife into Freeview.

I could understand Sky doing it alone, if they thought there was a market, buying the broadcast rights for stuff from TVNZ and I could understand TVNZ selling broadcast rights, money is money, but to actually brand the channel as their own... just feels wrong to me.

They should replace TVNZ6 with this service and make it available on freeview with adverts. Just keep TVNZ 7 has advertising free.

Can't do that because TVNZ 6 & 7 are basically govt funded on the basis that they're advert-free.

EDIT: Had a look at the TVNZ 6 schedule because I don't really watch it that much and they're broadcasting "A Dog's Show" weeknights at 11pm

- that brings back memories.

Not great news for those who don't have Sky. I think that TVNZ thinks that everyone in NZ has Sky..

It's sad that it's not going to be on Freeview. Many of the older programmes made by "New Zealand on Air" were "made with the help of your broadcasting fee" which means all New Zealanders back then contributed towards their production and so they should be made freely available to all New Zealanders who helped pay for them - not just the select group who have Sky.

That's not the point. It's a tax payer owned station helping the bottom line of a private pay TV operator while the rest of the country who don't have or don't want Sky can't get it on Freeview.
