Well, as a follower of the Android revolution over the last 8 months or more this is heartening news, if not just for the fact that perhaps one of our major telcos is pulling finger. XT - one phone release won't make or break you but missing the boat on Android? Priceless - at least that may be the way you contribute to the direction of TNZ's share price. Look, I have no allegiance to either major telco but I grow tired of their 'great range of phones' which clearly are not.

I agree with others an 'official' supplier of the N1 is ideal but the reason I've held off so far is that this was the first incarnation of the phone and it would likely have issues that would be massaged out in later releases (such as the HTC Desire). If VF is serious, they should not rest on the laurels of one release (as with the 'Magic') as since the N1's release, there are a lot more serious contenders waiting to push it off the top of the Android mountain, many of which are releasing now, if not soon.

Lastly, I appreciate VF has a voice via Paul on these forums. Unfortunately, I don't understand why our incarnation of VF plays so close to it chest. If you have plans that are about to be announced about the N1 within a few weeks - say so! XT can't do anything about it, they're still dousing the embers of their recent issues. Take a leaf out of VF UK - tell us what's coming so we can pre-order. Keep us in the dark and you simply risk us buying another phone from a competitor and using their network.

I'd love to hear more of your opinions, is this possible release of the N1 a watershed moment for Android in NZ? If the iphone 4 does come out mid/late year and has significant improvements, I'm begining to think it will make Android's fate in NZ that much more doubtful.

The US carriers are taking android very seriously and all the big carriers are releasing android phones this year, it is the year of android.. Any carrier not climbing on board are not keeping up with the times...
Simple as that...

The range of phones here provided by carriers is pretty sad.

I hope we do see a lot of android phones being released here this year and years to come.

Kilack: It would be better for Vodafone to bring in the desire than the nexus one.

The desire basically sorts out the issues that the nexus one had..
I ordered in a nexus one from the states and sold it 2 weeks later. The touchscreen was fairly inaccurate compared to the iphone, the menu buttons at the bottom always get pressed accidentally when typing on the keyboard (bloody annoying) and of course the multitouch screen is pretty limited in what it can do.

The desire replaces the menu buttons with hardware ones, great move...
Has FM radio..
Has the sense UI which I am not really fussed on, prefer vanilla android..

Considering the moto shadow is going to be out in June (looking very nice but its heading to verizon.. so hope they put out a non cdma version) if so that will be my next phone....
htc incredible is also out soon

Leave the nexus, its forums are plagued with issues... you can tell its googles first phone :P

I own a Nexus one and have never had any serious issues with it, infact i would recommend it to anyone.

I dont know how you can say VF should not sell it based on a few minor issues, have you even heard of Nokia's flop phone? The N97, and thats being sold by VF now with a retail price of around $1000, (remember it was $1699 at launch).

Although I do hear what you are saying, maybe VF or any carrier should wait to release any kind of phone unitl the first updated firmware is released. That 1st firmware normally solves any problematic issues like limited multitouch on the Nexus One and the 'not waking from standby problem' on the N97.

I'm seriously starting to wonder if there is some anti-android conspiracy at Vodafone NZ. Perhaps they don't want to cannibalise sales of the iPhone?

Well so far the nexus has been a flop, its sales are way down there. Probably more to do with the way it has been sold so far (not through carriers so not subsidised).

My wife owns an iphone and I expected the nexus to be way better considering the iphone is a bit dated now so I was surprised when the touchscreen, the whole basis of the phone wasn't as good. Not the greatest for the flagship of android. The multitouch problems can't be fixed as google have said that they aren't a bug, that it is just a limitation of the touchscreen used by HTC in the n1. It means its almost impossible to play some games on the n1 that require true multitouch and some games are even being flagged in the market as not playable on htc phones including the n1. It means if you try typing with two fingers fast that the screen gets confused etc, the axis flips etc, the phone thinks your fingers are in the opposite corners etc etc.

There are some awesome things about the n1 sure but having a crap touch panel on a phone like that was just plain silly and the menu buttons are a royal pain in the ass. I sold mine because there are some far better android phones coming out in just a couple of months (great thing about android). The motorola shadow and droid 2 are the ones to keep an eye on and the sony erricson x10 could be cool too.
Moto use decent panels also as seen in their first droid. I've read loads of forums now and HTC phones dont seem to have best reputation, they seem to cut corners here and there.. The next google phone which is being made by motorola should be way better I think.. even google said the first phone was a learning experience.

It is great you are happy with it, I would have been apart from those issues which were major for me.
I'm back to me sony erricson k800 right now waiting for the next android goodness.

No conspiracy. We will be selling Droids this year. The HTC Magic was well received despite the odd flaw (headphone jack cough cough) and we'll have a replacement shortly.

That is great to hear. It is expensive paying full price for these android handsets and importing them from overseas then having to pay for a plan here :).

I'm glad the HTC Magic had the mini-USB headphone jack!

Yeah...it meant you couldn't use the headphones while charging the phone as the same port served both purposes.

BUT! It made me go out and buy a Sony DR-BT21G stereo Bluetooth headset. Best money I ever spent. Now I have a pair of excellent headphones I can use with ANY phone without regard for whatever connection they may provide.

Any talk by mainstream media is good for android even if it is a bit dated.
Most people in NZ wouldn't have a clue what an android phone is, maybe now at least a few more stuff readers might :)

Your average joe would know NOTHING about OS's...period.

The only reason they know anything about the iPhone is that the marketing has been awesome. As all Apple marjeting hype seems to be.

Those Joe Public types still don;t know what iPhone OS is though.

Interesting how different people experience things.

My iPod Touch (which I love to bits) put me *right* off with all the pinching and squeezing. My hand would cramp. Seriously.

Android (HTC Magic and Nexus One, at least) offered both a trackball (I use it for fine cursor movements / adjustments / selecting text - my fingertips are too big) and a little - / + bar for making things larger or smaller.

Wonderful. Much better.

As for games....I bought several on the iPod Touch (SimCity, DOOM, NeedforSpeed, Wolfenstien 3D...etc..etc..) and found them all horrible to play due to the small screen and hand cramps. I haven't touched one in most of a year.

If I want to play games I do it on a PC. Handsets are horrible.

As for the Nexus One, I've had mine for almost 2 whole days now...and I'm loving it to bits. The 1GHz speed is great. Much faster than my HTC Magic. My Acer Liquid (768MHz) comes close. The greater amount of memory in the N1 for running apps is great. The larger AMOLED screen is colourful in a painted-wh$re sort of way....but great for looking at in all kinds of lighting conditions. Things stand out.

I appreciate multi-touch is important to you and the Nexus One does it well enough to keep ME happy...but at the same time I'm also very happy with the alternatives and find them both very effective easier on my hands.
