In reply the reason I want to use the phone as a modem is so I can dial into works dialup server. So I need the phone to work as a normal modem, not as mobile jetstream (which if you were going to use I would suggest woosh instead as its 6 times faster and a fraction of the cost).

I have managed by much experimentation to get the phone to work as a dialup wireless modem with much experimentation, and I'm not even sure I could duplicate my efforts, but this is what I did.

Download the Nokia 3105 pc suite and install it

Then download the nokia 3105 data cable software from their website (dku5_driver.zip) and install that.

After you dont both of that, and restarteed, connect the phone via infrared. Win XP will install it as a Standard Modem over IR Link. Then put in the extra initialisation string AT+CRM=0;+CSO=12

Add your dialup connection, phone number, isp details, and it 'seems' to work.

I'll be pissed off when i get my bill in a month if its somehow connecting using mobile jetstream instead of dialup though? Is there anyway on the phone to check if its connected via that and how much data its transferred?

Well if you dial any number other than #777 it means you are using circuit switched data, not packet data (mobile jetstream), you should notice it's much slower 14.4kbps also you'll be charged based on number of minutes (time of call)

Hi

I've reached the point where I'm going to move on from my Kyocera 3035 and had been looking at the nokia 6585 as a replacement since it seemed to have IR (my laptop does too, i want to be able to use the phone as a modem, and why pay for unnecessary cables), speaker phone and international roaming.

This thread has been pretty useful. It seems that this is a phone that has been rushed to market, and has some issues in its implementation. No MM, no email (I'll come back to this) and to add to the pot when you ring global roaming help at Telecom they tell you the phone won't work in the US because of software problems - although a sales agent assures it's all been fixed.

I'm not sure what lack of email means (which just shows my ignorance of what to expect on smartphones). My Kyocera can happily send emails but relies on Xtra mobile mail to do so. One bit of functionality I need is the ability to access email from my phone. Currently I do this by forwarding incoming emails to an xtra account and using Xtra mail to read it (this is hardly satisfactory since the demise of djuice since for some reason Xtra's server doesn't handle RTF and HTML - in the end I don't know why ISPs don't write WAP interfaces for their web mail).

Am I right in saying that with the nokia 6585 I'll be still stuck with this clumsy work around, and still have to use Xtra's mobile mail to send emails? Should I expect one of these new phones to be able to directly access pop and smtp servers? A bit of an explanation of the options and the functionality one should expect would be appreciated.

I note there is quite a bit of comment about the 6225 - what are its advantages - the Nokia AP site has a high level list, but no detail and as can be seen from the 6585 the devils in the implementation.

In the end I'm not wedded to Telecom and could look at GSM if the handset is going to do the job - at least I wouldn't need to borrow a phone for Europe.

sarnold, there's a distinction between a feature phone and a smartphone. In general a smartphone will have an OS, you can install programs, have a developer kit. In general they run Palm OS, Symbian or Windows Mobile for Smartphone. These mobile phones include e-mail clients, more powerful interface, etc. Most are GSM, with the PalmOne Treo 600 available on CDMA (US only).

Then you have Converged devices, more like PDA with a mobile phone feature. They're the Palm Tungsten W, QTEK 1010, i-mate and Thera PPC5050. The latest is available on CDMA, and Telecom is selling it as Falcon.

Then there are the feature phones. These have rudimentary address book, small colour screen, limited program availability (in general Java J2ME apps only), and sometimes camera. Some have a very limite e-mail client, that you can use instead of Xtra e-mail, which is a WAP based client only available to TNZ.

Hope this clarifies the distinction. We have reviews of Palm T|W, Treo 600, HTC Falcon, P800, P900 on-line. Have a look here.

You can download games from alsorts of places.. easiest being the Games link from the minibroswer. Of course it all costs money. Though at work I was bored and downloaded Bejeweled. $3.50 ain't much really. And i liked the PC version.

Of course.. there are other source... ka-cough-zaa... which you can tried out with the developer sdk for the nokia phones which come with an emulator... really cool :)

Hi all. For those of you that have been having problems obtaining drivers for the APT DAT-USB-2280 cable (for use with Nokia 2280, 3585, 3586, 6585, etc), please contact me directly on jaradw@pccard.co.nz. My contact details are also available on our website.

As several people have already mentioned the support section for the website does leave a little bit to be desired, however our contact details are on the serial number sticker of the cables we sell. Support emails are generally replied to as they come in. Please supply the serial number of the cable you have when requesting drivers. Without a serial number drivers will not be emailed.

For the following:
Gui Rimoli - brazil, the settings used in New Zealand are likely to differ from those in Brazil, however the initialisation of the various CDMA phones (2280 through 6585, etc) is the same. If you download the Nokia 6385 driver from their website you should find this will operate fine for you.

radionut, morfeus - Provided your cable is an APT cable, please email me and I can email you back with the drivers. The latest version is 2.0.0.7-2.2.7, these have been migrated to mini-cd, and are currently being produced. Expect to see newer cables with mini-cd's shortly.

Androo - as you noted the initialisation for circuit switched data is different. Just an +CRM=0 is generally sufficient to drop it back to CSD data. For Packet data the commands are different. What you 'should' also be able to do for the infrared ones is to install the Nokia CSD (DataFax, etc) driver onto the serial port it lists the Infrared on. You could also then potentially install the CDMA driver aswell and just choose which modem driver to use depending on the application.

As always for anyone having problems with an APT product, please contact us directly. Provided the product is one of ours we're more than happy to support it. Regardless of whether the query comes from a dealer, or an end-user. Email to support@pccard.co.nz goes to several staff here, jaradw@pccard.co.nz to myself directly, and finally, there's phone, 04 4999 763. As mentioned, please have the serial number handy to verify the cable is an APT one.

Thanks.
Jarad Wise.

taniwha: If it's one of our cables I can assist with linux drivers on 2.4 series kernels (I'd also expect 2.6 series should work too, but it hasn't been tested). In terms of the sending a ringtone to the phone I'm not sure what your best options are. I'm not aware of any software for syncing ringtones into the phones under linux, but I also haven't researched it either.

If you'd like some help with the linux usb-serial driver email me and I'll send you what I have - jaradw@pccard.co.nz

thanks JP wise.
I'm able to borrow radionut's cable, which is one of your cables.
I'd like to know that it will work before shelling out $200.

Do you know if PalmOS drivers + cable exists for the 6585 or 3105? The guys @ the local tcom retail didn't know what a PDA was.

hoping to ditch my gsm some day soon.

Hi taniwha, I've just emailed the latest drivers to radionut, he should have them this morning.

As for the PDA site of things. We dont' currently have any cables directly to the DKU5 style interface of connector, however we are expecting our first shipment of serial cables to the DKU5 (2280, 3105, 3585, 3586, 6585) style interface.

Pretty much all of the Palm & other PDA cables we do are through the serial interface in the sync port. Once the serial cables have arrived you could potentially do something with a serial sync cable and a null modem adapter, however it would be a bit unwieldy in terms of having about a metre of cable between the DPA & the cellphone. What model of Palm do you have?

I have also heard some feedback on the use of the Nokia InfraRed to Palm, some feedback saying it works fine, other feedback saying it doesn't work. So I don't know what it's official status is. That said, it's not something I'll be testing as it doesn't involve any of our products.

The serial cables are DAT-RS232-2280 and should be listed on our website by now. They're due to arrive ~25-Feb-04. Likewise OT, our Hyundai TX95c USB cables (DAT-USB-TX95c), and also USB cables for the Kyocera Slider - SE47 (DAT-USB-SE47) are due to arrive at the same time.

I bought a USB cable in Australia which works on this phone and only cost $50. Why is everything so expensive here? (I saw somewhere else in this topic that a similar cable cost $NZ200???)

Hi Androo, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. In New Zealand the two predominant choices are the Nokia Genuine cables, and the APT third party cables.

With the genuine ones your support comes from the Telecom Data Support Helpdesk (aka DJUICE helpdesk), or alternatively the manufacturer. With the APT ones your support options include the DJUICE helpdesk, but also APT itself. With other 3rd party cables your support is somewhat more limited. Also to the extent of what technical knowledge your reseller has.

Likewise if you purchased your cable from overseas it's necessary to go back to your retailer/reseller if it fails and needs replacement (assuming it has a warranty). If the cable is one of ours then the 1 year warranty is handled onshore.

As you've seen in the earlier posts, if your cable is one of ours then we're only an email or phonecall away.

Jarad.

Yes, but how many people need technical support once the cable is set up? Which in most cases is not a big drama any way. There is also a HUGE difference in the cost of a TX95C cable from cellect, and from APT..Something to the sum of the original Hyundai cable being $70 cheaper from cellect. Also small things, we can not get the clone DKU5 cable to work with oxygen phone manager, but works out of the box with the Nokia DKU-5 Cable. I would rather try my luck with an off shore cheaper cable, or even a cheaper original cable.

Cheers
Pete
