Nokia produce their own MMS server software (the part that the telco uses to serve up the MMS) amongst other components in a MMS system. I'd guess if telecom had gone that way, the nokias would have MMS working but other 027 phones would not. (i'm guessing here).
There's still some friction between nokia and qualcomm over cdma standards, so it's hadly suprising if it's an incompatibility.
either way, it was made clear to anyone purchasing a 6585 from telecom that it is not a MMS phone, so i don't think you have any right to be complaining now.
but, just wait a little while.. a workaround isn't far off
It is not up to Nokia to release the different firmware for the Phones
It would be up to telecom. I am guessing that they would of rather had a good Nokia Phone, to the market early like the 6585, than dragging out the release of the phone 3 or 4 mths to get MMS going, by which time 3 more Nokias will be on or coming to the market with MMS.
Then if you did make an upgrade, only people who take their phones to get serviced will get MMS on the handsets, and that is just more confusing. It is not just Telecom. 2 Carriers in Brazil and Canada have also disabled MMS on this handset
So who else got a "dear valued customer" letter from Telecom this morning?
Apparently there are some bugs in the 6585 issued in NZ that prevent operation in Canada and US, so I am asked to take it to my nearest Telecom store and part with it for 4-5 days for an upgrade. They will loan me a phone if they have one available.
...hmmm I wonder what else this upgrade will add/remove?
Should I wait a while for more bugs (features) to be found before getting an upgrade?
The new firmware for the Nokia 6585 only fixes the roaming issue. Does not "Add or Remove" anything from the phone. It unlocks The "A" Band and a channel on 1900Mhz to enable the phone to roam in USA and Canada.
last time i sent my phone to telecom for reprogamming.. instead of fixing the half broken features (like caller ID) the broken features were removed completely :-(
sounds to me like NZ is very much a test ground for cdma nokias. Means we get the latest nokias, but also means they're not fully tested yet.
Seems the case. I had a Nokia 2280 before I got my 6585 and that had bugs for Africa! There were certain letter combinations that would reset the phone mid-way throuht writing a txt, incoming messages that would reset the phone (namely people sending me a txt with only the character: ä ) Try sending this to someone you know with a 2280. Also there were incomplete bits, like missing menu text, descriptions etc. Not a nice phone at all. I only had it about 8 months and its been away for service twice, and needs to go again....if I don't throw it in the trash.
That is funny, I have heard the same thing from a mate, but my work phone was a 2280, and it never let me down at all. Calls were good, texting was fine. I had no real issues. A mates one does the same as yours, but my brothers is fine.. beats me!
We are one of the first, if not the first to get Nokia CDMA phones. The bugs in the series 40 Nokia phones like the 6585 and 3105 have been ironed out for the release of the new series 40 phones 3205 and 6225. Also I hear a little talk of a series 60 CDMA Smart Phone in the works :)
IMHO The CDMA Nokia phones are still *some* of the best CDMA Phones telecom has to offer. And only going to get better.
I have to agree. Nokia CDMAs are the best 027s on the market.
yes, they have bugs, but they don't make the phone unusuable and most bugs nokia acknowledges them and you can have them fixed.
compare to the shocking bugs i've seen in hyundais and kyoceras.
the cdma market is still young, and many of the other manufacturers had never made phones before cdma appeared.
Yea i'm a huge fan of Nokia phones. I've had a couple of Motorora's and Phillips, even a Samgsung and a Sagem but they just do not compare. The only reason I am using a CDMA phone tho is because of Telecom's $10 txt cap. I prefer GSM, mainly because of it's huge worldwide compatability and SIM cards make upgrading or borrowing someones phone SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier. The introduction of the RUIM cards in CDMA will be good, but I still favour GSM. I still keep an old Vfone so I can txt my friends overseas because Telecoms network supports so few two-way textable countries.
