Do you actually know what countries you can currently send MMS's to from NZ? Is it still limited to Vodafone oz or are there other countries now available?

I guess we might see Telecom<->Vodafone MMS once telecom have a decent MMS service and phones! :-) There are some awesome CDMA phones due onto the market in the next few months so it'll be interesting to see how long it takes Telecom to get them to the market since Telecom's $10 txt is no longer cool for the teenage market, they're now all increasing Telecom's churn to Vodafone to get their PXT phone!

anyone else noticed that txt is still 20c??? I would have thought they would have reduced it to about 10c now the pxt is 20c (and telecoms $10 of course. video pxt is still $1 (not that i use it).

PS. I also noticed what a mess the vodafone website is, everything is all over the place and hard to find etc... The GX20 has been removed from the website but its page is actually still there; go to the GX30's page and change the "gx30" in the url to "gx20" and you'll find the page, ODD!!!

Why would Vodafone want to drop their SMS price to 10c?? There is absolutely no reason in the world why they would want to do it. If you want $10 txt move to Telecom.

ohh, im sure they won't want to, but when people realise they can send pxts for the same prive as txts they all will (using more bandwith for vodafone).

I know people who have saved literally hundreds of dollars (paying for their new phone over and over) by sending free pxts (usually just with a blank picture) instead of 20c txts... people aren't dumb :P

I think he meant they were sending MMS without pictures but with text attached. In this case it was some good saving...

Vodafone let people send PXT messages for free for a reason. To those people that think it was "free" well yes, it was to a degree.

What we were all part of with "Free Pxting" was a rather large beta trial. Those using PXTing back when it first came out (and for quite a while afterwards) will remember the major issues the PXT platform had. Messages downloading 5+ times, unable to retrieve PXT messages etc.

The other advantage to Vodafone was (and still is) while you're PXTing your friends who don't have PXT phones, you're advertising the product for them and making those people without PXT phones wishing they had one.

So yea, Vodafone "lost" money on free PXTing, but they got mass testing and great advertising out of it.

Why haven't they reduced TXTing? Because they want people to keep PXTing (If they're the same price most people will PXT because the feel they're getting greater value), thus those people without PXT phones feel they're "missing out" and upgrade.

From what I understand...

Vodafone don't want MMS interconnect at all with Telecom - why would you if you thought it would mean people going to the opposition?

And if you were Vodafone you woudn't worry too much about PXT prices going down since you've had too much trouble being able to charge for it in the first place, and there is no way that you would drop TXT prices as you are making far too much money out of it....

Will be interesting to see what they do about this in the next few months

Are you happy with paying 20c per text ? Especially since the network cost of delivering a text is less than 1 cent- it's common knowledge in the industry that if you look at the price per Mb (in terms of bandwidth) text costs about $200 per Mbyte

Is spam a real problem - when was the last time anyone got spammed in this group (noting that $10 text means that a Telecom customer can text ANYONE anywhere). I can honestly say that I have not been spammed once.

Do you really think Telecom is losing money on this - wouldn't the equation work along the lines of
- Telecom had poor text usage
- They are driving a lot more usage now
- Given the marginal cost it would take close to 10,000 text per month to actually lose money
-They would have had some churn back from Vodafone
I would have thought they would be smiling.........

Is it good working in any call centre ?

awesome - will now build my own network and charge $1 per text for quality SMS service.

Clarification - Telecom can text ANYONE in NZ and not anywhere in the world - point taken...

In my opinion it does strike me that Vodafone is acting a little like an incumbent by not reducing the price it charges for this service relative to other services as it is effectively 'creaming' the market. I guess tho if people are prepared to pay $1 a text then why wouldn't you - great for business but what about for customers. I am sure 1.3 m Vodafone customers would be ecstatic with the prospect.

And isn't SPAM unsolicited?

I have always believed that text messaging is grossly overpriced.

Compare a text message to a voice call : I can speak several sentences within the space of one minute, and I get 70 off-peak minutes with my $20 per month plan. A text message, on the other hand, can usually only allow enough space to take two sentences at most.

Also, compare a text message to an email : In an email, you can send pages of text at minimal cost.

I understand that in some situations, text messaging may have a significant convenice factor, but I find that in most cases, a phone call or email is a far better option. Unfortunately, my friends seem to have other ideas and insist on using text messaging constantly. :(

yeah, the operators are taking extra bucks on the sms's... it's a scam, the infrastructure is so cheap, its all profit....

funny how there is no price war..... it's a fixed game.

damn right, some people are really slow...

some people also swollow anything they're told/read..

SMS (not 3g) was the subject of the post...

SS is very cheap infrastructure, built for engineers to test the line and commuicate to each other... it was not considered by any operator to be a consumer toy... it grew like wild fire when consumers got hold of it and has become a source of major income for operators, but not one they built for us, and not one they predicted...

MMS and 3g (dont get me started on the license cost) were ideas created in marketing rooms and are very deliberate revenue tools.... both with high infrastructure costs, and should be charged accordingly...

but don't so stupid as to confuse the issue of sms pricing...
