hola,
my first post ;-). anyone here using hsdpa or so called 3.5G mobile phone/vodem, can post their speedtest result here? im getting nokia 6110 nav and it should b here within few days! planning to get data plan from vodafone only if only the hsdpa is fast enough. i wanted to use the phone as the modem with my tablet when im not at home or surfing on its own. thinkin of using skype too, if possible (not the main thing)... i fancy wireless technology... first time woosh come out i screamed and been waiting for it to come to dunedin but it never got there-but it went all the way to bluff and invercargill! (i dont understand why they choose not to go to dunedin) but now im in wellington, tried woosh and the speed isnt that great at all. toooooooooooo slow. dialup is better! hahaha (no offence to those who use woosh) first time vodafone started its 3G network, i bought sony ericsson v800 for the sake of trying the video call. (i remember they offer free video call that lasted for about 3 months?)

if anyone can help me out by posting their hsdpa speedtest result would be awesome! i need it before i can make the decision to change from prepay to postpaid in order to get the data plan.

cant wait for my 6110 nav phone! yeaaahhhhhh

speeds vary on signal strength from 800k to when I am in work 2.5 mbps on DL and max 384k up

Average is just over 1mbps

I am currently in Aussie using Telstra's Next G, just did a speed test and this is what I got just now;

Telstra say this is the fastest mobile network in the world, I would disagree but anyway. How ever Telstra's Next G 850Mhz network offers very good coverage. In New Zealand you can't really beat Telecom's CDMA EVDO for footprint.

this is what i found in telecom website:

Mobile Broadband (including rev a upgrades)

Primary coverage
Voice calling and nationwide mobile data primary coverage as above. Plus when when in Mobile Broadband coverage areas upgraded to Mobile Broadband rev a you can work remotely with average download speeds of around 800Kbps* and average upload speeds of 300Kbps. You must have a Mobile Broadband rev a data device. If you are in a Mobile Broadband coverage areas that is yet to be upgraded you can expect average download of 400-600Kbps and average upload of 100Kpbs.

sound similar to what johnr got from vodafone

Keyword being *footprint*, for speed yes they are similar (EVDO Rev A Vs HSDPA). The above speed test is from Telstra in Australia using their Next G UMTS 850Mhz mobile network, Not Telecom CDMA EVDO Rev A.

It's better to disclose now that johnr works for Vodafone.

I recommend Vodafone HSDPA as I recommend the Telecom NZ CDMA EVDO, they both are good. Your major problem will be coverage.

For example when I first got the vodem (I was one of the first to receive the vodem when launched) I was able to get 4/4 bars signal and connect with good speeds.

These days, I can barely get 2/4 and most of the times only 1/4 bar. It seems Vodafone was "tweaking" their coverage in the area I live, causing the entire thing to fall apart.

So it works, you most likely will get an average of 800 Kbps - 1 Mbps down, but all conditional to environment, signal strength, etc.

For example I am now trying to connect to HSDPA to get a speedtest for you, but the damn thing shows one bar only, and won't connect no matter what.

I have used both Woosh and Vodafone 3G Broadband at home and I found the speed to be pretty much the same. Perhaps a slight advantage to Vodafone, but not enough that you'd notice. Admittedly it's been a year since I used Woosh so they may have fine tuned their network since then.

The performance of any wireless network is variable, but I get up around 1400kbps pretty consistently on 3G Broadband (HSDPA).

I'm over in oz at the moment as well and had a play with a few Next G phones and a laptop with datacard in a Telstra store today and clocked a speed using speedtest.net of 2.7Mbps which is apparently using the 3.6Mbps card.

You are probably in a better coverage area. My Modem is showing Signal Strength: Average.

It is how ever a good service, and I wish Telecom would go down the 850 UMTS path also.

I managed to connect from near Cuba St (Wellington) today and got about 1.5 Mbps down, 256 Kbps up.

maybe coz of auckland weather is nicer than wlgtn! haha

anyone live around newtown wlgtn hospital? i wonder how strong is the signal over there since i wuld b there most of the time. hey johnr, can i have data plan on top of my prepay plan? if not, can i get post paid plan using the same number as my prepay number?

plzzz no rain 2moro...... i dont wana get stroke coz of sittin in front of the tv at night
