OK so I've got a Sony Xperia Z1, had it since September 2013. Was and still is under a 2 year contract with Vodafone UK (just using a Voda NZ SIM in it at the moment). Warranty lasts until Oct 2015 according to the Sony website.

The battery was acting up and its performance very poor lately. Now since the last few days the battery has pretty much died.
After charging the phone to 100% overnight I am lucky to be able to run it for more than 1 hour.It will then switch off and need another full charge. Today I had to charge the phone 4 full charge cycles in order to keep it going.

I've measured the mAh capacity with some tools (via Android kernel) and although the Z1 is specced to have 3000mAh capacity, the phone tends to switch off between 1500 and 1800mah, sometimes even less.

My conclusion is that the battery has had it and needs replacing. Problem being that the Z1's battery cannot be replaced by the end-user.

Normally speaking I should contact Vodafone UK to replace the handset as its still under warranty, problem being that I have now moved to NZ and shipping would be a pain ( I will be without a phone for a VERY long period ).
Is there a Sony Xperia repair facility in NZ?
I doubt Vodafone NZ will be able to offer any services in terms of repair.

I would just talk to Sony NZ and see what they say. They at least have an agent here, if not their own service centre. At worst it'll be a no chance on warranty but maybe they can get it fixed cheaper and faster than shipping it anyway?

Most phone repair shops will be able to replace the battery, but will unlikely be waterproof afterwards. 
You can buy the battery for $15, http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Original-Genuine-LIS1525ERPC-For-SONY-Xperia-Z1-L39H-C6903-L39T-L39U-C6902-3000mAh-L39H-3/32285678077.html , on Youtube videos the battery replacement looks relatively simple.  If you didn't want to try it yourself, should be less than $50 for  a phone repair shop to do it.

Computersunlimited in Wairau repaired my Z1 smashed front screen and rear cover for $50, after I bought the parts myself from aliexpress.

First response from Sony is that I should reinstall the software (lol). After I wrote this doesn't make any difference they wrote:

So despite being under warranty, the repair may not be paid for because I require the service in a different country than where I bought the phone.

Good news is the repair centre is at a location I pass on a daily basis. Would be very easy to drop it off/pick it up there.

Sony NZ were quite unhelpful when my Xperia P battery did similar after 18 months' use.  I fixed it by buying a Moto G

I might try to source a battery and DIY though

FoneBiz have just come back to me and said it will cost around $100 to have the battery replaced in NZ and warranty will not cover it. They can do it in less than 24 hours.

In case I wish to use my warranty I would have to send it to the UK, have it repaired and pay for postage both ways, which would probably work out more expensive and I'd lose my phone for nearly 3 weeks.
