I'm thinking of listing TiVo modification service on Trademe

Any thoughts?

I'd be inclined to wait until we have proven bug free modded tivo's out there working. The comeback would be my concern. There's a big difference between 'retail' expectations and 'enthusiast'.

Not to sure I would want that responsibility. Would the service also come under the consumer guarantees act?

At this stage you're selling the ability to run custom software on a TiVo, but the software is not released yet.

Replacing a PROM chip won't change anything at all unless new software is loaded on the drive, so I agree with waiting until you can offer a full product that makes a TiVo work again.

Not a commercial business, so CGA doesn't apply.

Dumb question - but where do I buy a single PROM if I want to have a go?  If you have an auction for that I'd be interested.

@Spong can provide you with an IC and socket holder (I highly recommend the holder).

Our TiVo case fan spat the dummy a few months ago and I have not been able to find a new one.

It seems that case fans are measured across the case (not between the screws or diagonal) so I need a 70mm fan.

Does anyone know where I could buy one or does anyone plan to ditch their TiVo and would be prepared to send me their fan?

Darren (Dr Tivo) and I disassemble, clean bearings and relube/reassemble the existing fan as part of our PROM replacement process. Most noisy fans can be brought back to life that way, for a few years at least. YMMV.

I want to know, if I get my Tivos modded up with the new PROMs and the new software to go with it, would my Tivo Desktop still work.  I bought the Tivo Desktop software a few years ago in order to get the Media Access Key so I could use the multi-room viewing feature, such as transferring anything from the playlists to any other Tivos in the house as well as to my pc.  Will this feature still work?  I really do hope so as this is the feature I really love with Tivo as there is nothing else on the market in NZ that can do this.  Also I will have to get someone to do all the updated stuff to my Tivos as I can not do it.  Will there be an Electronic Repair Shop that could take on this job, say on the North Shore or anywhere in Auckland for people like me who do not have the skills to do it themselves.

Hybrid has stated that if you have the Home Networking Package (as I do) you'll still be able to move recordings from the Tivo to your PC. Moving between Tivos is something that we don't know for sure will continue, but since the media access key remains in place post modification, we certainly hope so, and during the testing we've been doing, it looks good so far. There are a few unknowns here. Even the brilliant community developers can't say for sure. It will be important that you don't do a full clear and delete on your Tivo, as when the official Tivo mothership goes off air, that functionality would disappear(although plans are there to resolve this). There's no reason to do this anyway, but it would be wise to keep an image backup of your drive, or better still upgrade to a new hard disk and keep the original 8yr old drive for a backup so that the HNP remains with your machine in the event of drive failure.

If you've been following this forum you'll be aware that I'm able to do these mods and luckily, I'm on the North Shore. Private Message (PM) me for more details.

Have tried to PM you but I don't think my emails are getting through to you.  Could you let me know if you have received them.  Email only a few minutes ago, but when I press to send,  it says something like invalid recipient.  The emails are to do with an image backup in order to keep the HNP and Media Access key which I would be devastated if I lose that feature.  I can not do an image backup as I do not have the skills and know how and I was hoping you would do it for me as I am also on the shore.  Not sure if it has to be done today.  Could you PM me to discuss.  Thanks Spong.

What do you think is going wrong with sending PM email to you.  Am I doing something by mistake somehow as I have sent 2 emails now.  Would you like to PM me back to see if I can receive them.

I've sent a PM to you as you seem to be having difficulty. I promise I'm not an "invalid recipient" although my better half may hint at that sometimes :-)

Hi have received your PM and have sent email to your supplied email address.  What  I need to know urgently in regards to image backup of drive which I can not do.  If it has to be done today and if it can't be done today for whatever reasons, what should I do.  Should I today take out the drive from my pixelating tivo for safe keeping, this is the tivo which I had powered up last night.  I believe the drive is good in this particular tivo even though the machine is pixelating as I had swapped out the drive for another and it made no difference and it did not stop the pixelation after the swap so I suspect it is something else wrong with this particular tivo and not the drive.  If I use this drive for safe keeping when should I unplug this tivo, today or tomorrow.  I can't use the drives for safe keeping from my working tivos as I still have lots of recordings on them and have no more room on my pc's drives to transfer them to.

Do you think this drive on the pixelating tivo is good to keep, it is working brilliantly except for the pixalation glitches which are very small and random and it now has the latest updates that we all got a few days ago and it can recognise my other tivos and vice versa.

If it is ok to keep this drive and when will I need to take it out of the tivo, today or tomorrow.  I do not want to lose my HNP and Media Access key as I would be totally devastated if that happened.

I would prefer to keep this drive as my backup for safe keeping than do an image drive backup as I don't know how to do that plus if I had to do an image drive backup on one of my other tivos, would I lose all my recordings, and also would this image drive backup have to be done today?

Thanks

Hi all, I am not technical by any means and would really appreciate it if there is someone in Auckland willing to make the modifications to my S3 Tivo.  Hope I'm not too late.

Just PM me. $2 for the chip, $2 for a socket if you want one, plus $1 postage or you can pick up if in Christchurch. Or others on here (eg Spong) based elsewhere in the country.

I should add though that I am currently out of stock - 22 days now since a batch was posted to me from Australia. Any day now..

If you go back through the thread earlier you will find a few people offering to do it - at this point it is PROM chip swap only till the software update is released.  I can do it for you or Spong can.

I have a programmer here which I have tested, so if anyone has blank or removed proms they would like to reprogram I can do that.

It was pretty easy to remove, reprogram, and resolder the existing prom in mine, so could possibly do this too if needed.
