Dont follow you. From what I gather, whats the difference between my Tivo and my Panny Freeview recorder??

Tivo has a grid UI, Panny doesnt. Tivo has thumbs up/down, who cares, no one uses it. To me, the grid UI is what we all want. Thats all.

Bought a Panasonic BWT 760 a couple of weeks ago while on special at Harvey Norman. It has a grid UI for guide info, setting up recording etc. Has a few idiosyncrasies and not as intuitive as the Tivo, but overall it's not bad.

Can you give a pic of the grid UI? Or @MikeB4 ? No luck on the black screen issue?

@tdgeek I surrendered with the Panasonic paper weight, I negotiated a refund from Harvey Norman/ Panasonic on the grounds that the device was not durable or free from fault.

Good to hear Mike. Did it have a grid UI as the poster above says? I gather that the main issue for the Tivo lovers is that Freeview devices dont have a grid UI so I was surprised by allan post.

@tdgeek The UI is much the same as the Panasonic DVD players and TV's. Simple main page which is from memory a 3 x 3 box arrangement with sub menus off that. The EPG is probably better than I have seen on TiVo, Sky, Freeview (anything is better than that) Vodafones T Box

and Igloo. It is fast and simple to use. The UI and EPG weren't the problem it was how the device worked and didn't work that was the issue. If you get a unit with out issue you get a good unit.

If I can offer some advice that will really improve the unit that is turn off FreeView Plus, that system is terrible and makes the system struggle. It can be turned off in settings.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

8 days?? Since when? Just checked now and mine still gives 14 days for most channels (Prime only 8-9 days).

Yes you're correct. With the exception of Maori and Prime it is 14 days though I'm sure about a year or two ago it went down to 8 days..

TVNZ channels definitely have 14 days, Mediaworks channels can be a day or two short but Maori, Prime and Al Jazeera etc... are only 8 days or thereabouts.

Fun fact, on the strength of a positive review of Screaming Reels (send up of fishing shows with Leigh Hart and Jason Hoyte) I went to set it to record via the online Genie. Turns out TVNZ Duke doesn't exist at all in the online EPG.

Does the EPG let you filter out things such as movies? That was one of the useful things I found with the tivo, as well as the tivo genie.

I haven't tried it yet, but there is keyword searching available and in addition to keywords, one of the options is "Programme Type" which has as one of the items "Movie/Drama", so I'm expecting that is a yes. I never used that option on the Tivo, so I can't really say whether it looks better or worse.

I'm just enjoying my TiVo while it lasts, and will look at and test a few options in late August or early September. Likely something home spun using a HD HomeRun or similar and a fanless HTPC. The WAF must be very high, and the ability to rewind live TV is a must, according to SWIMBO.

I have heard of people throwing away perfectly good TiVo's already.
