Yep, it's not even the rental fee for the MySky Plus box that annoys me because at least it's being supported and upgraded/replaced if it fails. My beef is yet another fee in addition to the box for being able to watch the content you already pay for in HD!! You know, on the more than capable HD set top box you're already paying for? I understand Sky is a corporate and their shareholders want a return on their investment aka maximising profit but in 2017 still charging to view HD that is being transmitted from the same satellite regardless is stupid.

Netflix actually does the same thing. The basic plan does not include HD, you pay more for HD.

I guess HD means more bandwidth, so its justifiable for Sky Satellite. Not so much for Netflix.

Totally forgot Netflix charge a bit more for HD. I think your comment is correct but the wrong way around. The more users streaming HD adds more load on Netflix servers so charging for that is one thing. Sky channels that are in HD are already being broadcast in HD from their fully budgeted fixedbandwidth satellite(s) regardless of how many subscribers are watching. Much like listening to FM radio - or Freeview terrestrial or satellite for that matter, if you're in the coverage area you can passively receive it!

Sky needs to pay for more bandwidth for HD broadcasts if people use it or not, sure its being broadcasts in HD already but I guess that bandwidth from satellite is expensive.

The alternative would be to just up the prices for everyone and include HD by default. But I guess many people would not be too happy, especially those not using HD (why should they pay more)

They are in contract to 2019 for satellite. They already have an IP type STB. They already have VOD. Why? For 2019

That's OK if you want only FTA but what about the ones who want Sky say for sport??

They would need to subscribe to Sky Sport. And ideally the buffer would be variable to cater for any lower speed internet

You still have to have a MySky box and all the basic,sport,movies to use on demand though don't you so its no cheaper..

If they go to streaming only, or if they get a real good deal on the already amortised Optus satellite, their costs will drop.

I would expect Basic to be seperated as its currently subsidising sport

Sport costs what it really costs

You can have Sky streaming with MySky or not, it will be useful to easy the transition

They may re hash all offerings, but it will be cheaper than now

I read that Sky UK is unbundling their sports offering now.

In NZ, some would be surprised at the numbers still without cabled internet. We have some pretty diverse terrain. Freeview HD distribution isn't everywhere because of the terrestrial delivery issues.

Satellite is perfect for this situation.

Is Freeview still broadcasting SD TV1 6 times in parallel, so they can deliver regional advertising? Surely there's enough for HD there if they aren't doing the regional model optimally.

I see that this thread now has nearly 900 posts.

It seems to me that most questions and answers are about "off the shelf" replacements for TiVo.

As this forum is named "Geekzone" I am interested to know if many "Geeks" (or any) have tried the suggested/recommended "homebuilt" alternatives such as -
