Wiggum: Sky's whole model is outdated. They should just scrap satellite completely, and convert to internet streams over broadband, with an IP type set top box.

You obviously have no idea how much Sky would pay to Akamai to deliver VOD to all their 500k customer base.
The satellite delivery is by far the most effective way to deliver serial the to the masses.
Netflix deliver around 100GBit/second for 80k customers or so. To do that for everyone assuming everyone had decent quality broadband it would require further significant upgrades to a whole lot of CDN nodes.

In NZ, some would be surprised at the numbers still without cabled internet. We have some pretty diverse terrain. Freeview HD distribution isn't everywhere because of the terrestrial delivery issues.

Satellite is perfect for this situation.

Is Freeview still broadcasting SD TV1 6 times in parallel, so they can deliver regional advertising? Surely there's enough for HD there if they aren't doing the regional model optimally.

When I see the rants about Sky using 80's tech, down with prices etc, I rant back at lets go 100% streaming too. But satellite is very very good. Internet is also, but not everyone has unlimited fibre. The issue Sky has is cost. If Optus drop prices a lot too renew the contract, then all is happy.

Too many compare NF at $14 to Sky. I'd be quite happy with NF at $14 if it included all sports....

It seems to me that most questions and answers are about "off the shelf" replacements for TiVo.

As this forum is named "Geekzone" I am interested to know if many "Geeks" (or any) have tried the suggested/recommended "homebuilt" alternatives such as -

MythTv
Tvheadend
NextPVR
Plex
EMBY

Very good point.

Me, its only about FTA, my Panny BWT720 PVR does most but all of what Tivo does, thats fine for me. But good to get back on track

Could that cause Optus to "ok, we will drop prices for the satellite contract, but not by that much"? Due to your reasoning.

Sky has 800k subscribers, and its a great solution, and it keeps bandwidth away from NZ BB, I think thats a good thing. It also allows the rural populous an option for FTA, also a good thing.

They will be if they have been reset and need to connect to the service to register them, if the server isn't online. They will basically be bricks.

The only reason I'll keep mine in storage is so if I ever get around to making a MythTV or similar with loose hardware I'll have a case to Frankenstein it all into. Someone earlier on suggested this followed by someone who had fitted their PVR hardware into an old VCR case.

I used a VIA mini-ITX board. Very under-powered by today's standards, but it was probably over 15 years ago.

Wow... nostalgia. I have that exact same VCR in the spare room. Kept in case there is anything on tape I haven't digitised and want to watch. I think it still works (as a VCR) but it hasn't been fired up in a couple of years.

The tape loading mechanism warped on mine, and was too expensive to repair. Was a brilliant VCR. Only fitting to give it a new life. I still have it in storage. Thinking about installing a more current model Mini-ITX board in it and using it again.

I'm still procrastinating though am now seriously drifting toward a homebuilt solution. However I can't find anything concrete in terms of minimum/recommended hardware spec (on a modest budget) or even which software solution to use.

My requirements are:

- a single box that houses both front and backends as the fibre and main terrestrial aerial cable terminate behind the main TV so would like to reduce the number of devices. We do have a second TV and other devices to stream to but have a Raspberry Pi for an additional frontend
- ideally runs silent/energy efficient
- must output at least 5.1 audio via the HDMI cable
- dual HD terrestrial tuners (2K)
- a physical remote rather than a software/phone based app
- OnDemand apps (TVNZ, Three, Maori and any others available), Netflix and the other VoD services would be a plus for future proofing.

Not hugely fussed on automatic advert removal and have no need for 4K however these each seem to drive up the specs.

I don't have any suitable hardware laying around other than a 2009 Mac Mini which could be a little underpowered given its age. Would also require a separate frontend as the hardware itself doesn't have HDMI and read somewhere that model of Mini doesn't support multi-channel audio. Appears everyone's going with the Intel NUC's which support 7.1 audio via HDMI.

Really appreciate some guidance of hardware specs, CPU, RAM etc... if possible?

Suggest expanding or starting a new thread in the HTPC forum would be the best option. Then it will get the focus of the HTPC geeks....many of whom have no interest in TIVO threads.

I am closely following the Tivo S3 developments on OZTivo and am keen to keep my Tivo's operational if at all possible with new EPROM, flashing and HDD replacement. As a backup went and got two Panny 260's to avoid a domestic crisis.

I too was keen to find a software upgrade solution but time is running out and based on the feedback from this forum I have replaced mine with a Panasonic DMR-HWT260GN which is proving to be an excellent DVR. Also, Panasonic is offering a $ 50 Prezzy card if you buy one before 26th September. I bought mine from Andrew Magness at Magness Benrow Greenlane for $ 369 which is a very good price.
