If I read correctly, reboots are fine. But if you do a factory reset, you won't be able to get it going again as it has to register with their servers first.

It potentially reads that way of it needs to contact the server to register the device. Hopefully they open source it. But I guess if noone contacts them for a solution they won't.

Yes I am starting to get really annoyed by this sort of thing and think consumers need some protection to stop devices being unusable for the purpose it was purchased for. If windows suddenly stopped working bricking all PCs there would be a big uproar. I am not having the best of luck with my smart devices. First it was my Sony smart TV which is no longer smart after apps stopped being supported. Then it was my igloo Now it is TiVo. It is the major downside of buying a device that has to contact a remote companies server. Many people with home automation are going to have the same problems in the future.

I saw this coming as soon as 'Smart TVs' were announced. As there is no ongoing revenue, there is no incentive for the manufacturer to keep them going. They of course simply want to sell you a new one.

Manufacturers have contributed to the perception that 'everything is disposable'. I'm not a 'greenie' by any means, but I am aware of the environmental impact that my industry (tech) has, and how little I see being done to alleviate this.

For giggles I thought I'd see how TiVo Australia were covering it, not surprisingly identical... EXCEPT...

Apparently Australian users have option of buying a discounted "Fetch TV" (https://www.fetchtv.com.au) through Harvey Norman for current active TiVo subscribers with no ongoing costs for the basic package. You just have to register at https://myaccount.mytivo.com.au/tivoswapout for the swap out offer.

The specs of the box look brilliant and also offer a cheaper Fetch Mini device which basically streams from the main device. Also looks like they took some queues from Igloo and have multiple streaming channel packs plus a Netflix app.

WTF? Where's the NZ model??

Yes just saw that as well. Guess us Kiwis don't count.. Even the $6 channel packs you can get with it are interesting..

Many of those $6 channels look to be 'owned' by Sky here in NZ.

A pity - I would happily fork out $6-7 a month for the Variety addon...

But I don't want anything to do with SkyTV.

Those channels are also owned by FoxTel in Ozz but doesn't seem to be a problem there... Maybe they're reselling a FoxTel service ..

Did some Googling and appears a puff piece about VOD services in the Herald, Fetch TV was mentioned as hoping to launch in NZ later that year (2015)

Thanx for the link. I did ask Fetch this morning if they were going to something here in NZ as they are offering in Ozz though I don't expect a replay..

Edit. Just got a reply from them

"Thank you for your email, there are no immediate plans to expand into New Zealand just yet, however this is something we are aware of and keeping an eye on."

They also potentially have a conflict of interest, because they are in the business of selling TVs. So if they cripple old ones, they hope that people will then buy the newest model. Although IMO it can damage the brand. SOme mobile phne manufacturers also are very poor at releasing updates after they release a new model, and they are the ones I avoid.

I think this disposable society thing has been made worse with smart phones, where people tend to replace their devices every 2 years when their contract renews. So this has also crept into other products. Even fridges now with smart functions potentially have a far shorter life, whereas fridges used to be able to last 30 plus years

In some countries they are required to take back the device for recycling. I can see all sorts of laws changing around this in NZ, and all sort of new compliance costs.

Given that the announcement was only today, they may still make an offer.

There were nearly 20K TiVo users in TV-land back in the day - I suspect quite a lot fewer today, given the total lack of product lifecycle here in NZ, but I suspect still a potentially juicy lump of customers that Sky might want to tempt....

ouple of years ago that TiVo could do a subscription system here but was shouted down by everyone who said that they paid for a lifetime EPG and that's how it was going to be. Now the life support is going to be turned off.

I suspect that wouldn't have made any difference, as the amount that people would have been prepared to pay, simply for a data feed of freeview channels, wouldn't have covered the cost to run it. How much would you be prepared to pay, a hundred a year? For not much more you can get netflix.
