Just caught up on this thread today so have missed the Panasonic Prezzy card offer that expired yesterday but is it worth paying almost double to price for the Panny? Are there any other viable off-the-shelf alternatives?

Welcome.  Yes the Panasonic does HD and you're right the two units are very similarly spec'd BUT the DishTV box is a little underpowered and laggy.  In my reading of it, many have gone with the Panasonic and have said by in large is a good TiVo replacement.  It's not as good in some respects but does other things way better than TiVo did it.  Whether it's worth double the price is up to you.

My parents have bought the DishTV box a few weeks ago and although it does everything it says on the box it does seem quite laggy in comparison to the eight year old TiVo.  I'm most likely going with the Panasonic if I can get it for a good price.

Don't forget that good progress is being made in keeping the Tivo in play after 31st October. A PROM chip replacement is required and a new software load. If you love your Tivo, don't give up just yet. Much of the work is being done here in NZ.

If you go to about page 13 onwards, you'll see things are getting close. I've received a few new PROM chips to mod my Tivo and few friends ones, and the first test software load is close to being available.

It works fine, np so far, The live pause work ok, it pauses when you hit pause and ff rewinds fine :)

It beats the panny live pause hands down ! that one drove me crazy too many screens and too slow to pause.

The enhanced EPG is fine as well, takes a sec to load but all epg's do apart from the tivo. Its a weekly epg as well.

I setup a couple of series links as well np. Just a matter of clicking on record and series link.

I like the media options too. It found my network media server ok and played movies from it fine.

This might be a replacement for my tivo yet, or at least one to use while I get the tivo modded.

I'll see how it goes over the next couple of days and report back.

If you have both DishTV T2200 and the Panasonic DMR-HWT260 I think we'd all really appreciate your honest feedback comparing the two.  From all the reading I've done the Panny has some issues with pausing live TV but the DishTV who I know two households who have one seems quite laggy.  I am comparing the lag to TiVo which I know isn't a fair comparison.  I haven't seen a Panny running to compare.

 I dont have the panny anymore sorry, took it back to the shop for a refund.

But remembering back they are both the same speed for doing things.

The dish TV you have to make sure the remote is pointed directly at the box which some would think makes it laggy.

but if you do that its fast no lag, EPG is slow to load as all freeview ones are, and you can either use the freeview one or their own enhanced EPG or the freeview+ one -  I think the panny does that as well.

Compared to the panny the live pause is instant, the panny you have to click all sorts of screen buttons to do this which I hated.

The T2200 does something almost the same as the tivo also which I like, If you turn on auto live pause in the settings it records everything automatically on the current channnel for up to 3 hours, so when you push pause, its there instantly. As soon as you change channels it starts doing the same to the other channel. Half like Tivo I guess as Tivo records both channels for 30 mins.

The T2200 doesnt have any external programs like Netflix on it though but I have all those on my TV so its ok

In summary I like the T2200 better than the panny. I couldn't like the panny, it seemed frustrating especially on pause.

You are the only person I've come across who has had both units for direct comparison so thanks for that.  My father made exactly the same comment about the IR being quite sensitive compared to the TiVo remote which could be pointed anywhere and still work.

The Dish T2200 thread is full of issues, have you checked that thread? Are the various issues all sorted now?
