So my Tivo remote died last night, after playing up for a couple of days. It looks like the spare I purchased in late 2016 will get some use after all!

The little Panny that I bought several weeks ago is all up and running and replaced our second Tivo... it will be promoted at the end of the month.

Did the remote die or did the DVR switch get moved to the second unit??

Nah.... the red LED up the top was not flashing when buttons were pushed. It wasn't batteries, and the electrical contacts looked fine.

I might not get mine modded now. I'm very happy with the Dish TV T2200, its going well without any problems at all :)

I just found another working remote just by going to the ip address of it on my computer..

FYI, the Dish TV T2200 $199 deal at The Warehouse is now Not in Stock on their website. There was one left at the Glenfield branch after I bought mine a couple of hours ago so if you're thinking of buying one, I wouldn't leave it too much longer...

It isn't finished yet, but great progress has been made and the end is in site. There's no reason to believe this won't happen. More will become apparent over the next few weeks.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

On the Dish TV box its listed in a seperate section app and loads up fast as its not going through Freeview Plus.

Freeview plus is really slow it seems everywhere.

I really wonder why it was even introduced. I don't know anyone who regually uses it.

Does it transmit over the air or via the internet ?

I've noticed that if I access it by the TV banners its pig slow.

If access it through the app on the DishTv box its a lot quicker and usable.

EDIT: Just tried to play Marvels Inhumans on it. It gets stuck on the advert and goes no further ?

waste of time.. won't play with that again..

Spong, Can you please elaborate on what is being worked on? Are you talking about what 'Darren' on whirlpool is driving? I've only read the last few pages there, it seems they are waiting for some illusive 'software'. Is NZ in their scope?

There is a document available for download on how to re-chip the units. Its pretty complicated for the average DIY person and involves some serious soldering skills.

Yes, this is what Darren (Dr Tivo) is talking about on Whirlpool. The first step is to replace the PROM chip with one that's had kernel checks removed. This is a little like Jailbreaking an iPhone for example. This is a surface mount chip and replacement is not something you should undertake unless you have experience with desoldering and soldering SMD's. Darren and a few others including some NZ guys have been doing these for Tivo owners at no charge. Once the chip is replaced, the Tivo continues to operate, just as it does now on the current Tivo mothership, but the door is left open for new or modified software. I've modified a couple of machines, but as I'm 58 now, I find it much harder than I did when I was younger, so can't offer this service to others. The modified software is being worked on by a number of clever guys based here in NZ and Australia and as a hardware guy myself, I'm one of the people testing what's been done so far. This is definitely being done to service both Australian and NZ users, and it's possible the new mothership may even be based in NZ. The first test release has been available for about a week and at this stage it consists of building a bootable PuppyLinux USB drive, copying some files to it and booting from it. It accesses your Tivo hard drive connected to a spare SATA port or USB to SATA interface and patches some files and installs others. This is all pretty fast and easy. Currently the installer enables the 30 second forward skip, modifies the kernal (kill initrd), installs some useful utilities on the hard disk, installs ssh, ticketmaster and enables the serial port console. The machine continues to operator as usual connecting to the old Tivo mothership as the real work is not yet finished. When finished, the plan is that modified Tivos with the full installer run will connect to a new mothership that's community supported. You will likely need to recreate season passes and favourites because the program codes will be different, but all going well, all existing saved programs will be kept. There's likely to be some extra features and surprises but much of this isn't being discussed in public yet. The software guys are keep things fairly quiet until after 31st October, but I believe they expect to have it finished by then. It's not a bad idea to upgrade the 320GB HDD to 1TB or 2TB at the same time, so this should make the Tivo useful for quite some time into the future.

I might still consider keeping our TiVos going if I can find someone in South Auckland with the skills etc required to do the soldering. My eyes don't work as well as they used to, so not game enough to try working at that level!

This is all sounding great and although suspect it's to skirt around legalities of hacking an active device, it's leaving the run a little late isn't it? Based on posts on this thread (and others) many have already retired their TiVo or replaced them with other devices at some cost. I'm at the point of having to make that decision now.

That said I'll be holding onto my TiVo so will be following progress on this with keen interest. If anyone resurrects theirs I would definitely recommend a new HDD as after 8 years it's bound to have a bit of wear and tear. running 24/7. Would hate to go through all the upgrades then have the drive fail.

If you're worried about your existing HDD failing, you can always make an image backup using Winmfs Beta 9.3g or clone to a new drive using the same software, and extend to use the full capacity. I own one of the current Panny DMR-HWT260 models, and although good in some areas, is nowhere near as good as the Tivo in areas that matter IMHO.
