There's likely to be some extra features and surprises but much of this isn't being discussed in public yet. The software guys are keep things fairly quiet until after 31st October, but I believe they expect to have it finished by then. It's not a bad idea to upgrade the 320GB HDD to 1TB or 2TB at the same time, so this should make the Tivo useful for quite some time into the future.

This is all sounding great and although suspect it's to skirt around legalities of hacking an active device, it's leaving the run a little late isn't it? Based on posts on this thread (and others) many have already retired their TiVo or replaced them with other devices at some cost. I'm at the point of having to make that decision now.

That said I'll be holding onto my TiVo so will be following progress on this with keen interest. If anyone resurrects theirs I would definitely recommend a new HDD as after 8 years it's bound to have a bit of wear and tear. running 24/7. Would hate to go through all the upgrades then have the drive fail.

Yeah for me it's a bit late as the family TV SLA contracts me to uninterrupted FTA recording capabilities :(

If it were done already I'd be seriously looking at keeping the ole Tivo.

Sounds good. I'm in. Where does one source replacement components and acquire replacement instructions?

I'm not replacing my TiVo, so am happy to wait until a bit later before hopefully returning this to active duty.

It's been mentioned already several times. You can get a PROM chip from Darren (Dr Tivo) and he has a full guide available at his site:

Check the "Saving Tivo" section. You'll need someone who is capable of replacing surface mount chips. The software update should be available in the next few weeks.

This has been discussed previously (waaaaay back). No, the device will not currently work in NZ, and when asked they said they didn't plan on releasing a compatible model here. Perhaps they'll change their minds eventually.

Just got a reminder email from TiVo about the closure of the service. Basically recommending not to use them post 31 Oct :-(. It’s getting real now!

I'm still deciding about modding the old Tivo box as well, I've got a price to have it done.

Its going to cost to have it done with a new 1 TB drive installed at the same time and with couriers there and back.

The Dish TV box only cost me $199 new on special from the warehouse and its going great.

Steve approached me as I have stock of the pre-programmed PROM chips. I can supply these although stock is low until more arrive from Darren in about a week. I'm passing these on at close to cost plus a small amount for freight and packaging. Replacing these surface mount chips is quite challenging, and by the time you add the cost of ChipQuick and desolderwick, cleaning the machine and lubing the fan etc, it's not something that comes super-cheap. In fact I'd rather someone else does that job. When you add a new 1TB or 2TB drive if desired, the cost does add up. If you have love for the Tivo, and faith that the community will unlock some great stuff, only you can decide if it's worth it. It's looking good so far and should be supported by automatic updates and future new features. These may include features you would have had to pay extra for. Enough said...

I've ended up getting a DishTV T2200 as well which I set up on Friday. I've only used it for a couple of days but it's looking good. A couple of niggly things:

- despite the HDMI out set to use AC3 (Dolby 5.1) in the global settings, TVNZ1, 2 and Three each had to have their Audio output individually set to AC3 as were only using PCM by default

- also noticed the signal strength is a lot weaker around 45% to 50% compared with my other tuner based devices on the same aerial averaging around 65% to 75%. On Friday night I did notice watching TV live it was briefly glitching and dropping out a little but playing back one of those programmes which also recorded seemed more resilient. Will test a little more to see if I can reduce my four way splitter which obviously might be easier post 31 October. Unfortunately despite a clear line of sight to our transmitter, we live in a thick stucco house lined with a chicken mesh which I think emulates a Faraday cage as without going through the exterior aerial radio reception is pretty bad. Worst case I get a 20dB signal booster I happened to see advertised in this week's Jaycar junk mail for around $50.

Based on other comments I immediately bought Dish TV's Gen2 'programmable' remote which I highly recommend with a much wider IR range than the remote it ships with. It's also very comfortable to use, positive button feedback... and did I mention very light?

One beef I do have is the T2200 doesn't ship with an HDMI or RF aerial cable.

I also got the Gen2 remote but I hate it! I guess it's possible that mine is faulty but although slightly better than the bundled remote, it still needs line of sight to the box has has to be pointed towards it. The buttons are tiny and unergonomic. Fast forwarding through adverts is a real hassle. Maybe I've just been spoilt by the excellent Tivo remote?
