I was just checking the tuner stats on mine through the info button and on all channels its:

Signal Strength : 48 %

Signal quality : 98 %

I also have two 4 way splitters on the cables.

I guess it's possible that mine is faulty but although slightly better than the bundled remote, it still needs line of sight to the box has has to be pointed towards it. The buttons are tiny and unergonomic. Fast forwarding through adverts is a real hassle. Maybe I've just been spoilt by the excellent Tivo remote?

I agree, the TiVo remote is far better but the Gen2 does vaguely need line of sight but compared with the bundled remote it's far better. I was also impressed mine came with genuine Philips (from memory) branded batteries rather than the nasty no name Chinese batteries of the original.

Appreciate you checking. My parents have a three or four way splitter so will have to check how theirs goes. Dad did mention he tried to use the RF out on the T2200 to feed the TV but said the resulting picture on the TV was very pixely so reverted to feeding the TV direct but haven't followed it up.

I switched to a harmony 650 remote, It can be pointed anywhere in the room towards it even to the ceiling and the T2200 still gets it :)

And only one remote control now for everything taking the place of 5 remotes :)

Personally can't recommend the harmony remotes enough. They transform complex systems into simple tools.
Highly recommended.

My DishTv T2200 box is going great. I'm fully used to It now and have almost forgotten about Tivo now :)

I've ended up getting a DishTV T2200 as well which I set up on Friday. I've only used it for a couple of days but it's looking good. A couple of niggly things:

- despite the HDMI out set to use AC3 (Dolby 5.1) in the global settings, TVNZ1, 2 and Three each had to have their Audio output individually set to AC3 as were only using PCM by default

- also noticed the signal strength is a lot weaker around 45% to 50% compared with my other tuner based devices on the same aerial averaging around 65% to 75%. On Friday night I did notice watching TV live it was briefly glitching and dropping out a little but playing back one of those programmes which also recorded seemed more resilient. Will test a little more to see if I can reduce my four way splitter which obviously might be easier post 31 October. Unfortunately despite a clear line of sight to our transmitter, we live in a thick stucco house lined with a chicken mesh which I think emulates a Faraday cage as without going through the exterior aerial radio reception is pretty bad. Worst case I get a 20dB signal booster I happened to see advertised in this week's Jaycar junk mail for around $50.

Based on other comments I immediately bought Dish TV's Gen2 'programmable' remote which I highly recommend with a much wider IR range than the remote it ships with. It's also very comfortable to use, positive button feedback... and did I mention very light?

One beef I do have is the T2200 doesn't ship with an HDMI or RF aerial cable.

Very rare for anything to include cables these days.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Just a quick update on progress with the "Post 31st October Tivo" project.

Great progress has been made over the weekend with the NZ EPG guide. BTW, the new guide includes data for Chan 5 (Maori TV) and Chan 15 (Te Reo), These have been missing from the official Tivo EPG since they moved to HD I believe? Everything's going well, and everything's on track. Don't throw your Tivo away. I personally believe it will be better than ever.

By all means have the PROM chip replaced now as it won't affect normal operation in any way, and when the software is released to the public, this is an easy upgrade for most people here. I'm really impressed with the community spirit involved with this project, with some pretty cleaver people involved.

One interesting fact that became apparent over the weekend was that we get exactly twice the recording hours from our Tivo drives compared to the Aussies, due to our more efficent MP4 streams. We get (estimated HD hours) 120hrs from the standard 320GB drive, 400hrs from 1TB, and 800hrs from 2TB drives.

Will be watching this pretty closely myself. Certainly having all the VOD services including third party ones available together on a standalone set top box would be ideal. "Smart TV" manufacturers are notorious for having apps for services, not supporting them then phasing them out after three or so years then get left with what was an expensive dumb TV.

Quote from press release above: "Recently appointed CEO, Jason Foden, says Freeview hopes the recorder’s launch will be welcomed by Kiwi viewers, particularly those impacted by TiVo’s exit from the New Zealand market later this month" If they were wanting to cash in on TiVo users they are pretty much one year too late, we were having this very conversation in this same thread when Hybrid announced their end date back on the 2nd of March!

I bought a Dish TV T2200 a couple of weeks ago and despite all the criticism I've found it quite stable (with the Gen2 remote) but nowhere near as slick as TiVo. Hopefully Dish TV will retrofit some of the new features into the T2200 like third party VOD apps. In another thread they've already confirmed the NZ on demand system will be upgraded.

Agree about moving smarts off the TV itself. I've found this to be highly limiting, even with a Sony Android TV, and it's possibility of side loaded Apps.
The Android TV approach fell over when you realise a lot of apps aren't event presented in the app store to install on the TV anyway, because they require a touchscreen and the TV doesn't present as having one.
The rest all still hinge on content providers committing to releasing apps for these various TV platforms, and updating them over time. That's a massive undertaking, when you consider iphone/ipad, web page, android, xbox, ps3/4, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Sony/Android TV etc will all need an app! No wonder the smart TV's lack support.

Things like Sky Go for example, don't appear to be available for smart TV's? The best cheap option you have is to chromecast it, but screen casting video isn't always smooth if the app doesn't allow for it natively.

TiVo didn't include netflix for example, so I don't personally see TiVo as the one box to rule them all. Reality is a laptop plugged into the TV is still hard to beat.

Maybe that Vodafone TV concept might offer this, but once again it's not here yet and there's been no word on pricing either. Still not ideal if you don't have good broadband, or are on a data capped plan, especially if UHF signals are being broadcast directly to your home anyway. HD on TV 1, 2 and 3 (still no freeview HD prime...) is hard to beat, as well as 5.1 channel sound where the programme offers it.

I wouldn't ever recommend a Dish TV anything to anyone. Have personally found them local agents for china rubbish, tailored just enough to NZ requirements and then shipped out the door to make a profit. No thank you.

Could you direct me to where the PROM chip can be bought from and if there is anyone in or near Wellington that can do the install (for a fee of course).

I have my TiVo and my mum's to get sorted.
