It is possible to get the PROM off without damaging it. Then it can be reprogrammed later on and fitted to a TiVo later on. PM me if you are interested,
Spong:
I'm in Auckland and doing PROM chip changes as well as supplying the PROM chips and sockets. However the enormous success and popularity of this project means that programmed PROM chips are like hens teeth for a while. Currently I have 50x more on their way that could be 2x weeks away, and also hoping I will have some sooner from another source. PM me for more details.
Would you consider reusing some of the original ones you took off previous swaps? If so send them to me and I'll clean them up if there is any solder bridges, program them with the modified prom and send back to you (no charge).

I'm collecting the old ones slowly but do not have enough to be worth while yet. All relatively clean with no solder bridges. Ready to reprogram.
I'd stick my hand up for chip change out and patch for those in Tauranga but i am away at a school camp next week and don't want to disappoint. Possibly from the weekend of the 11th I may make myself available.
Simon.

The method I use to remove them doesn't render the old chip able to be reused, and just personally, I'm doubtful that it's good practice long term to use the old ones again after all the heat they've been subjected to. Economics comes into it as well. New PROMS are not that expensive either to justify this in my opinion. I'm hopeful that I'll be stocked again in less than 2x weeks as I have 80x blanks on the way that I'll need to have programmed as my programmer is 1-3 weeks away.

What happened with that guy who was banging on about reckoning he could claim something under the CGA due to the Tivo service being discontinued?
That's probably me you are referring to. I cant be bothered unlocking the thread but a few main points.
- I had quite the factual paper trail that led to my Tivo having a life time service which is a service for the life of the tivo machine.
- My TiVo still works today so no opportunity for a CGA claim.
- I was encouraged by Consumer NZ who recently said (on the Blueborne security issue) "Unless advertised that it can't be upgraded, we think any phone that can't receive security updates isn't fit for purpose under the CGA." The relevance being there was no mention of the limited licence when tivos were sold.
- And finally my trail came to an end when i discovered I hadn't bought the Tivo off Telecom or Spark as I thought - the entities to which a claim would apply. Sure it was bought from a shop fronted as "telecom" but that shop has now gone and I cant track the company XYZ Ltd ( I don't recall the actual company name other than it wasn't telecom). You cant make a claim unless the "person" is identifiable. (what that also means is that there was no contract between me and Telecom so - quoting the Telecoms T's and C's, as was done in the original thread, ends up irrelevant)

Did you buy it from a physical store, and was that likely to have been a franchise?
Are you going to get your one modded so it won't be useless in a few weeks time?

Yes it was from a physical store. No idea if it is franchise or not - didn't know they had franchises. It was all decked out in telecom stuff so for all intents I just saw it as a telecom store.
And yes I will get it modded - I'm hoping there is a Christchurch person who can do it as thee way its been described is beyond my abilities

Yep that's me. There is quite a queue now thanks to the delay in chips arriving.
Send me a message and I should be able to get it done in a week or so.

CGA also applies to the company who supplied the store, so if, for example, Telecom imported the Tivos and supplied them to the stores then Telecom are involved. If it was Hybrid TV and Hybrid TV are now defunct then there is nobody left to go after.
Hey guys, I've replaced the PROM with the new programmed one but all I get is flashing green light when I turn it back on. Same thing happens with the old PROM now. Any ideas what might be happening? The socket hasn't been fitter properly maybe?
Thanks
I had this after I selected "clear programme info and todo list" - twice.
That was two days ago but it seems to be OK now - after I unplugged for several seconds then powered on again.

Almost certainly you've got an open or shorted track that's happened during the socket installation. As you've found, it's not easy. You can trace most of the lines, but not all of them.
