ouple of years ago that TiVo could do a subscription system here but was shouted down by everyone who said that they paid for a lifetime  EPG and that's how it was going to be.  Now the life support is going to be turned off.

I suspect that wouldn't have made any difference, as the amount that people would have been prepared to pay, simply for a data feed of freeview channels, wouldn't have covered the cost to run it. How much would you be prepared to pay, a hundred a year? For not much more you can get netflix.

I'm already paying for Netflix, but I would have been happy to pay $5 or a month to keep my Tivo working.

Now you can say "I told you so, but you wouldn't listen..."

It was life time though.... I've been learning about life time.... my first gold fish just died... I only had it 3 weeks. :(

I'm also paying for Netflix... I'm actually finding that less and less value and considering just cancelling it too.

Don't know what I'll do once my TiVo dies.  Likely just spend more time on facebook.

They mythTV option is worth a go really.  Is there a myth TV or Kodi front end for Xbox One?  If so then yeah, I could whip up a tuner and book recordings through that.

Hi there, I am on Team Kodi, so if there is anything I can offer help with on this thread, let me know.

Kodi has recently been put in the windows 10 store, and there is a chance it will get to the point where it can run on XBone. We are not there yet though.

When I saw this early this morning I checked Trademe and 1 was for sale.  Now there are 8 for sale. The stampede to get rid of them to unsuspecting buyers has started

Saw that before and passed on to trademe the notice from Tivo, Trademe are now contacting everyone trying to sell a tivo and telling them they have to change their sales to state Tivo NZ is ending

I suspect there wouldn't be enough users for 5 dollars to be sustainable. Then does that apply per device or per household. Also there was nothing stopping tivo offering a paid subscription model moving forward. But from the looks of it, they appear to have been waiting this out so they didn't have to provide refunds on the product, as they really emphasized the time period they have been providing it for.  They have had technical problems of various sorts for ages. But they must only have had a time limited license to provide the service in NZ if it has eneded. Not a good look for the Tivo brand to leave customers high and dry though IMO

Feel a bit sorry for those who are selling unused tivos on trademe prior to this being announced, or those who have recently purchased one. Also many elderly did buy these as freeview replacements for prior to the analogue signal being turned off. Maybe one way around this type of problem is requiring providers of these types of boxes to use the official freeview EPG. That would provide some protection for consumers.

You mean a big money pit!

I think that many people probably don't mind too much that the tivo is ending, because they got it free with their telecom connection, and they never ended up using it. It also meant they got unlimited internet for several years, for the price of a metered connection,as telecom were unable to work out how to make tivo traffic unlimited. So having the tivo probably saved them money!

Thanks, will keep an eye out.

IF it's on an Xbox One, and can link to a dumb old machine running somewhere with a tuner card, then that might work.

Cheap if I already have the gear.

Re the TIVO not being fit for purpose/intentionally bricked etc...

They have an out because it's not being bricked as a freeview decoder, just the smart functions of it.

We had a license for the life of the EPG service, which has now ended.

I think they've got a pretty solid out in terms of not agreeing to offer the service for a lifetime, either the owners or the hardware, just the service, which is now going to die a natural death.

Well not everyone got it free. Some of us early adopters actually paid for it. But well worth it in my opinion. Bought a second one for next to nothing on Trademe a few years later. The only thing I've ever had an issue with was a fan that died that I replaced. Sad demise, but inevitable.

Yeah nah, that's not quite the TIVO level of simplicity I was looking for...

Neither did I, and I know someone who purchased one when they came out, and that was around $800, which wasn't cheap. Never had any problems with any of mine, apart from several DOA units. They do seem to have been built to last.

I am wondering if anyone has contacted Tivo to ask them to opensource it. They don't seem to be easily contactable, as no email address or other contact details on their website, apart from a 0800 number which is no doubt a call centre.

Yep, and I think there is where there is a gap in the market.  Current set top boxes are either not up to the standard of the Tivo, or else they are too complicated for a lot of people to install / configure or be bothered with.

E.g. I can't be fagged fiddling around with a PC and tuner cards and installing (or even compiling source code) just to get tv recorded.  I want a plug and play box that just works.  Perhaps I'm asking for too much....
