Anyone know the cheapest way to get something with the same sort of features? Eg is Panasonic's pvr the best and cheapest alternative in terms of something that is also going to be reliable. I haven't had good experiences with noname branded devices.

You would have thought tivo could have released a patch l that could give it access to the freeview epg OTA so it doesn't need to download it.

I've been looking around MythTV's website and wiki, but I can't find any explanation of how to set it up on Windows - any tips? If noone can work out how to get the EPG from Freeview then this is probably what I'll use.

MythTV is installed on Linux. You could have a Windows frontend though with Kodi.

Sucks you guys don't get FetchTV in NZ... I was researching it for the In-Laws as their TiVo was dying. Ended up dumping Foxtel and getting one myself, and they bought one 2 weeks ago. Love it.

They'll be spewing when I tell them about the TiVo trade in deal. :/

It is cheaper than other good PVRs and has many more features and much more flexibility.

As stated by others, it is not difficult to set up.

I have played with various setups over the years, but TiVo is the one which my wife and kids are able to use without any dramas. And while its useful days are numbered as Netflix and the on-demand services get better, it's still highly valuable I think - so much so, that I upgraded the internal HDD to a 1TB drive a year or so ago.

I'm thinking that there must be a way to intercept the request from the TiVo for the EPG data and then replace the data with NZ EPG data...surely? Has anyone sniffed the network traffic coming out of the TiVo when it goes to the service? Couldn't one create a simple-ish server that hosts the EPG data for NZ, and then set a local DNS alias that points any request from the TiVo to that data?

This was my first thought as well. I will have to look into it. Possibly the 'services' other than the EPG might be the more difficult things to spoof.

Thanks. I was looking for an option more for an elderly person. The tivo was really simple with a small learning curve, to use so looking for something that simple.

I think any FV box from a Harvey Normal, Noel Lemmings will do. Different to Tivo UI (which I hated), but they all do the same job. FV+ is a good option too

Thanks. They are still wanting the full PVR, as they record things on season pass. I have got a freeview box with FV+ and in terms of just watching normal tv, it is a poor user experience compared to the tivo in terms of the interface and la.

From the Freeview website, the only quality name PVR brands seem to be panasonic, and there is also one samsung.But looks to be slim pickings. Their website though is really out of date, as they still have old dick smith boxes on it. The panasonic ones look okay, but not that cheap for someone only on the pension. I'll have to do a bit more research. If Tivo were also giving people a voucher towards a replacement, like they are for their customers in Australia, it would at least compensate people a little for the cost of purchasing a replacement device.

The 3 or 4 DishTV devices I have touched in the last couple of years have IMHO a horrible interface.

My wife is a real technophobe and refused to touch the Tivo when I bought it into the house. It did not take much time for her mind to be changed. When I told her of today's announcement, her instructions were to replace it with something that lets her 'rewind the (live) TV a bit like the Tivo does'.

Mysky is probably the closest alternative.

VLC player now works on Xbox one. Can that link to a backend recording server elsewhere on the network?
