Over on the Facebook Paul Warner from NEC asked if Sommet Sport will work on TiVo, and according to Richard Allen Hybrid Television are looking into it.

Does anyone here (looking at you Dan!) know if there is anything to this rumour? It seems to revolve around MHEG-5, which Sommet imply they will use for more than just the EPG. There may be something to the rumour because as I understand it MHEG-5 is required for Australian Freeview Phase 2 certified devices, and I assume Hybrid have an interest in TiVo complying with Phase 2 in Australia.

Is there an update coming?

It's on my tivo, Channel 300 or something, didn't have to tune it either. Go back 1 channel from tv 1

No but I think he's implying that the new channel may utilise some MHEG5 functionality over and above the freeview EPG *, in which case how is TIVO planning to allow for this on the TIVO? If at all. Probably don't give a stuff given TIVO is a flop here in NZ presently.

* A bit like the UK 'red button' interaction, whereby you can follow individual formula one cars feed footage during a race for instance.

Well it is not helped by the fact that it is no longer sold. Also TVNZ getting into bed with sky with igloo, nz is too small a market. I think there perhaps needs to be so regulation in this market over content, but can't see that happening.

I am quite aware that TiVo is not NZ Freeview certified - discussion at the time was that the TiVo ability to transfer programmes over the network was a showstopper. However I have been told by an aussie retailer that TiVo was Australia Freeview (Phase 1) certified, and I was attempting to get some confirmation or denial of something said on Facebook that Hybrid was looking at the issue. As Australia Freeview (Phase 2) requires MHEG5, it is possible that Hybrid are looking at it to retain their certification in Australia - if so we MAY get the MHEG5 middleware.

TIVO NZ gets around the EPG issue via the internet sauce.

The question for this particular channel, and future freeview developments, is how do these 3rd party units get on when the channel offers MHEG functionality? ie NOT EPG related...

I assume they just don't work, but if MHEG capabilities were required for Australia, it would be cool to see them in use here. However, is Australia using the 5 year old Mexican hardware we are here in NZ? And does Australia/the rest of the world give a damn about supporting TIVO products in NZ after the failed attempt to introduce them here?

(As a total aside, and sorry, back to the EPG... Sony's PlayTV offered MHEG capabilities in it's little colourful brochure, but that didn't translate to using the MHEG5 EPG here in NZ.)

Was suprised however to find some weird asian channel on 350. TV9 or something ...

I am in Kapiti as well, and I can't find anything on the channels suggested here and elsewhere. It seems that TiVos are not created equal in this respect: on another forum someone with three TiVos in the same house could get the channel on some, but not the others. And I agree - where is Dan? It is a worry if he/Hybrid have abandoned the ship.
