Although I'm sick of the negative side of social media, for now I will be sticking with it. For me that is FB & IG.

The initial reason why I got both of these was to understand them better so that I can prepare to teach my daughter how to use them safely. While I could easily ditch IG at anytime I still use it so that I can understand whats on there while communicating about these things with my daughter. I'm thinking when she leaves home this could easily be deleted.

As for FB this will be much harder to ditch although I'm quite a private person and have very few friends linked I do find that so many businesses, sports groups & other organisations (including schools) use this as an important tool for communication.

I deleted my Facebook profile a couple of years ago, but still use Messenger and Instagram for messaging by the insistence of some friends. We did try Signal but everyone hated it (myself included, it's just not nice to use). I don't miss Facebook itself at all, and I don't engage with content on Instagram.

I use Tiktok, Twitter, and Reddit a lot - but just a consumer of content, I don't post. LinkedIn is the only one I have a profile with my real identity on, but I don't actually use it funnily enough - can't even remember the last time I logged in. I think I'd like to

Geekzone is probably my main form of social media and the only one where I actually interact with people (I really should get around to subscribing, I've been meaning to for a little while but didn't have the spare cash).

I have never been on Facebook, Twitter, or any of the others. Never felt the need. Geekzone is my social media. My friends know they can always reach me by email. Who needs anything more?

I just don't see the point of not using Meta's services but keep using Google's (Gmail, Android, etc), or M$'s (Outlook, etc). As a matter of fact, you should avoid any service with .com, as US has access to any of those domains and can (probably is) intercept emails.

In my opinion you are fully into privacy mode or not.

It is not a question of privacy for me. It's a question about the horrible content these platforms (Twitter and Meta) harbour.

I think the worst part about facebook is creating envy and affecting peoples perception of reality. Everyone looks amazing, perfect clothes, perfect faces, perfect lives, gourmet cooking and presentation, even their cats and dogs are groomed. Then you’ve got the misinformation...

It becomes the new normal that everyone strives for and it’s really hard for youth to escape its claws and feel happy about their average looks and lives.

Anyone uses Telegram as WhatsApp alternative? I started using it recently but people I know family/friends are still stuck on WhatsApp so have to use that mostly.

I'm not familiar with WhatsApp, but I assume it's for person-to-person chats. I use Element. It's a little buggy but it's open and not tied into any particular company.

I envy anyone who can ditch the lot of them, but I have friends who will only use FB, friends who will only use Insta, friends who will only use WhatsApp and friends who will only use Signal.

I'm also part of a number of football and car groups who will only use FB, they don't care, they won't post anything on their websites so it's FB or I don't see or hear about it.

I am on Twitter though, but use Plume on my phone so I only see what my friends are doing. But even then I culled the wider group last year when I was forwarded tweets about my son, who plays football, and some of the comments weren't all that pleasant.

So why do you call them ‚friends‘?

Email = My father is 61 years old and ...

61 ...! (reflecting as someone a decade++ older than that).

My mother 'managed' emails ~22+ years ago, then aged 80 (and continued to do so for her remaining 8 years).  And MIL (86) still managing to use email.

Still can't beat Facebook if you're in business though. Positions filled clients happy, staff happy.

I'm 55. Granted, first computer contact was about 40 years ago for me. Good early-80s.

My father is able to use email at 76, and my mother at 71, despite both having very minimal computer skills. Neither of them would have a clue how to use an instant messaging app or social media. I communicate with them exclusively over email and phone.

I am 77, used to do system-level programming in assembly, have friends around the world and rely exclusively on email for contact with them, saw my first computer when I was in my 40s, taught myself to program and wrote some early anti-virus software. It is not about age.

That comment was about the groups I'm involved with. They don't care they just want "reach".

But I also have friends who don't care about any consequences to the platform they use. I assume you know people who have no problem with FB and Messenger.
