Several things are pushing me away from LinkedIn

- People I don't know me asking to connect with me in an effort to sell me something I don't want

- Recruiters using it contact me, when my profile clearly says I'm no seeking opportunities.  I've been thinking about making a silly job title just to discourage that - maybe snake juggler in the circus (actually quite close to the truth).

- Increasing politicisation

- Increasing use of it for self aggrandisement

The first two don't worry me but the last two are getting out of hand.

It's function of volume.  I get 20 people a week trying to connect with me to sell me shrimp.  I'm not a buyer.  I'm not a seller.  I'm a catcher.  But not of shrimp. PITA.

Head hunters aren't as many often, but it's the presumption.

I have slowly moved away from some toxic platforms. I have removed and logged out of Meta apps - Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram - and today I have deleted all my Twitter content.

Enough of the crap these platforms attract.

Good stuff, I did this about 8-10 years ago and its the best thing I've ever done, including LinkedIn. More recently I encouraged friends and family to move to Signal, after I deleted WhatsApp.

It's a toxic cesspool the world could do without.

Have noticed in the past month or so the quality of adverts on the Facebook feed has significantly dropped.  So many network marketing / crypto / salesman courses that have zero relevence to me.  And is like every 4th item in the feed, so much so that stopped using the App and back on the browser with ad-block.  This is from the company that is meant to know everything about me and tailor adverts to send me.

So how do you delete your LinkedIn account?

I've been trying this morning. I keep getting an error message that something needs to be resolve, please resolve it then try again. But it gives you no information what needs to be resolved. my Googling suggests if you have a premium account you need to downgrade to basic before you can delete your account but I only have a basic account.

Probably should have put this in the things that annoy you thread.

A few weeks ago I started getting ads for Christian dating apps. The following week I started getting ads for homosexual dating apps. Because I'm not really engaging with Facebook any more they are probably lacking data to target ads, so they are just trying opposite extremes to see which one I react to more.

For the record, I have no interest whatsoever in dating apps!

Don’t worry, I’m betting this week the apps will be for www.believr.app- ‘where LGBTQ+ Christians come to find connection, belonging and love’.

Its real-estate for me now. I have found that even laugh reacting on the stupid xtian ad's will make them think I am interested and show me more of them. Hide all from that advertiser doenst work since they seem to have infinate numbers of pages advertisng the same thing.

Then it moved on to r34l 35tat3 ag3n7s crap. I seem to have stopped that but I am really wanting to avoing mentinoning their target products incase they think I am interested again in that.

I got rid of FB messenger some time ago, have been using Signal instead.  It's free and open source.  Everything you send through messenger FB uses that info to target advertising.  Family members would talk about things relating to me, then when I next checked FB I would get countless add's for those things.

FB does not know my location as I deny it that access, the only information it has to go on is my ip address, I found when I visited my brothers place and connected to his wifi, I got add's relating to all his stuff.

Additionally, I went with the wife looking at new cars, again FB does not know my location, but they found out my wife's location (probably because she allowed FB access to gps) and FB put two and two together, later that day I started getting ad's for car dealers in that same location.

I occasionally check FB messenger but only to make sure there's no one trying to contact me, and when I do check it its done through a private Firefox tab using a different ip address to all my other stuff.  I have a /29 subnet from my ISP.

I have never been on Facebook. I don't understand why anyone would use a service that treats its customers that way.

I enjoyed the slam dunk that Brian Acton & Jan Koum did on Facebook when FB bought WhatsApp for some $US19bn. That value was based on the expectant opportunity of trawling data from the 1 billion users of the until-then unencrypted WhatsApp. Here comes an absolute firehose of data, watch how we manipulate this!! Except...

FB bought WA with the founders tied in for 2 years, & a condition that FB leave Acton & Koum to run WA as they saw fit. So the day after FB shelled out the first payment, WA took on the Signal engine, encrypting messages between users by default & therefore nullifying the opportunity that FB thought they'd purchased. Tee hee.

Acton then followed up by jumping ship a few months early (leaving a substantial chunk of change on the table) to become the major financial backer of Signal with a $50m gift, an unspecified interest-free loan & becoming Executive Chairman of the Signal Technology Foundation & is also currently the interim CEO of Signal Messenger LLC.

Acton & Koum stuck it to Facebook good & hard. I doubt that either of them receives dinner invitations from Zuckerberg, & if they did, I doubt that they'd be accepting.

They're not customers, they're the product

@1024kb I didn't know that, that's brilliant. In any case, I had no privacy concerns using WhatsApp, I just didn't want to use a service run or owned by Facebook/Meta/Zuckerberg

Is there an issue with WhatsApp (other than ownership).

I have it for a couple of message groups.
