Colorsteel, you have probably heard of the product. It is advertised as New Zealand's favourite roof and they are sponsors on TV3's The Block. New Zealand Steel, manufacturers of Colorsteel, state that their pre-painted steel is hard-wearing, with a baked-on paint finish designed to impede flaking, peeling and fading to deliver long-term, low maintenance performance. For residential paint finish, New Zealand Steel offer a 15 year warranty for Colorsteel.

This is our Colorsteel roof. It was manufactured in June 1999 and installed sometime after this. As the photo shows, 16 years later, there is virtually no paint remaining, it's pretty much bare iron (no, the dark patches are not dirt, they are the only remaining paint).

Until recently, given its poor condition, we assumed our roof was a cheap iron product with an inferior paint finish. It was only when we had a pre-paint inspection completed last month that we learned it was Colorsteel. Our roofer says this is the worst level of paint loss he has ever seen.

Initially I was relieved, New Zealand Steel have a good reputation (don't they?) and should look after a customer with faulty product? So I contacted New Zealand Steel, forwarded photos, and asked if they would consider a warranty repair for a Colorsteel roof that has clearly failed to meet their specification.

New Zealand Steel refused any assistance. They advised that, at 16 years, our Colorsteel roof falls outside the 15 year warranty period.

I explained that we had only discovered this year that Colorsteel had been installed and it is plainly obvious that the significant paint loss had began well within the warranty period (it clearly didn't just fall off in the last 12 months!). So I asked if New Zealand Steel would at least be prepared to provide some remedy for faulty product and meet just half the cost they would have been liable if we had contacted them last year?

Again, New Zealand Steel refused any assistance.

I accept that New Zealand Steel are within their rights to refuse to warranty assistance. Just as I am within my rights to use social media to highlight a company who, in my opinion, supplied inferior product and refuses to provide any customer remedy simply on the basis that they are not legally obliged to.

New Zealand Steel claim they manufacture New Zealand's favourite roof. Well, Colorsteel is definitely not my favourite roof, nor a product that I would use again or recommend to others.

Ok, got that off my chest. Now off to find a roof professional with integrity to upgrade my paintless roof.

How close are you to that big blue ocean thing I can see in the background,

According. To this if you are more than 1km , the paint warranty is 18 years

You sure it's Coloursteel?  Lots of wannabe copies around.

Give it a clean up and paint and good as new?

richms: Karaka green?

I think so. Is there a known problem?

I asked NZ Steel if there was a known problem with any of their product, they replied: As we are unable to determine the end use of our coils it is not possible to determine where the rest of the coil used in your roof has been used and whether any issues have been raised.

Hopefully, someone can make sense of their answer, I can't.

They are saying that it isn't possible to determine if there was a manufacturing defect with that 'batch' of roofing, because they can't say where it all went to.  I am not sure what that has to do with your case, they should be dealing with each claim on it's merits.

If the metal is still sound I still think a paint job is the way to go.

Yes, about 10 years ago I think. Was a bit of a stink with lots of them failing.

If you are outside warranty and they wont sort it then perhaps you could look at disputes or a real lawyer as an option to get them moving?

Yes, it's Colorsteel - it's stamped on the inside of the iron - something we weren't aware of until our roofer lifted a section.

Yes, we will be painting. However, given it is Colorsteel, according to the manufacturer's specifications it shouldn't need to be painted yet.

they make many sheets of colour steel out of one coil. as they are unable to determine where the coils have been used they are unable to determine if there was a batch issue, or if its a one off.

Thanks, just found this re Fair Go and Karaka Green

Which does annoy me. Hiding behind a strict warranty period, yet they know they have supplied faulty product to a batch of customers. It would be very easy to confirm if our roof is one of the faulty batch. Why can't they just do the right thing by the customer?

We got the roof painted in our rental. The painter is a pro, and son of wife;s friend. he said, roofs need to be looked after, washed, that sort of thing. It may be that your proximity to the sea is the chief cause. Painter said that nobody maintains roofs in the real world. I think he also sad that if washing isn't regular, the paint will fail over time. I'm not justifying NZ Steel's response, but maybe your situation was a more susceptible location for wear. Having said that, if there was an issue with that colour, you'd expect some form of solution, even if that was a 50% share of the painting cost.

Jase2985: because they dont have to?

All companies don't have to, but many choose to do so. Arguably, those that do, do better in the long run with community reputation, trusted brand recognition etc

New Zealand Steel don't have to sponsor the Block, but they choose to do so, presumably to earn some of the above. It's a pity, though, their self promotion takes precedent over actual customer care.

As I said in my opening post, I fully acknowledge they don't have to. So I'm exercising my right to spread the word of my poor experience with them.

Read the article, so NZS are offering to repaint? Isn't that a good solution, to replace within 5 years or repaint after 5?
