Have just had installed a Whirlpool dishwasher.  Reading the instructions!! I see it calls for the use of dishwasher salt.  My previous dishwasher did not mention this.  Is the use of dishwasher salt widespread in NZ?  I live on the Kapiti Coast if that makes a difference.

dishwasher salt isn't really needed in NZ. Is there an option to turn it off?
