Solar will be installed later this month, and I have missed a good start with the last few weeks of nice clear sunny days.

I've used some hourly use history from my Home Asssistant to see if a TOU plan would offer any benefit.

This might change once solar is taken into account, but not there yet and being a Low User doesn't seem to help.

So the results:

Not off to a good start when looking at July to September 2025 - there was no difference in cost between the Ecotricity Anytime and TOU plans.

Between 35-40% use is during peak times of 7AM-11AM and 5PM-9PM and that could be hard to shift.

A more stepped TOU plan might work better, but I don't think trying to train the wife to follow it is going to work out too well 😄

Maybe consider restricting HWC powering during peak export tariff hours. We're often generating significantly well before 11am and I manually disable our diverter until after 11am but a timer could be set to do the same. An extra 5.75c/kWh on our Ecotricity EcoSolar plan but it all ads up.

No HWC involved, as currently gas califont.

When that dies, will probably go HWHP.

What's everyone's take on Lightforce? Any positive or negative experiences?

Why would you use a company where the person selling you the system is not part of the installation team.

We got quotes in October/November from both Harrisons and Lightforce.  Harrisons gave a number of base systems and then tried to upsell. I sent an email requesting further details from Harrisons but did not receive a reply and phone calls went unanswered. Lightforce gave a more "professional" presentation, only one system quoted. However, the sales rep pulled the old "I'll call the boss and see what we can do for you", coming back and giving a weekend to decide. As there didn't seem to be too many other suppliers at the time we went for Lightforce.  They quoted an installation mid-January but actually installed mid-December. Totally satisfied with the install process and phone advice when the inverter failed to connect to the internet after a power cut.

My solar is going live on Monday. 26 panels (12.3Kw) with 17Kw battery. 10Kw, 3 phase hybrid invertor. Installed by Micromall. They have been great to deal with.

Is this the 17kWh battery which is 15.6kWh usable capacity that is included in the micromall deal t0ny? I wonder which brand cells does micromall uses in this battery as the price is extremely low.

Its this one (https://www.micromall.co.nz/48v-51-2v-340ah-lithium-battery-lifepo4-battery-deep-cycle-battery-solar-battery) but similar to the one linked. I wasnt too worried about the cell but someone mentioned that they use 'EVE MB30 3.2V 306Ah prismatic LiFePO cells'. For the price and 15 yr warranty, I had one added to see how it goes. Will expand to two if it works out.

There's been a few days like this lately.  Feels a bit ominous for the long term FIT rates, or is there something else at play?

I wonder if it's a combination of some and a warm day reducing load.

Wouldn't that be the norm?

What's the point of having a company with FTE that installs your system, if they have a high turnover or they are very thinly spread and are not responsive?

I'm not sure I'm following. If the installer is also the salesperson, wouldn't they be even more thinly spread?

I would personally prefer to deal with the actual installer from the "get go", but my point is that you're ruling out a lot of companies if that is an absolute requirement.

In our case we went with Harrisons, and our experience was pretty good.

That has been my experience with Harrisons, the franchisee moved on from harrisons and for 6 months or so support was basically non-existent.  But after leaving a 1 star review on google, suddenly they were interested in my requests to update the grid settings for the regulation change.

However you could equally be concerned about a smaller company where one guy does sales, customer support, and system design.  What happens if the guy or girl move on from the solar industry?  With a larger established company there is someone to backup any warranty claims long after an individual staff member has left.

Yeah good hydro storage certainly keeps prices down, but why would the hydro generators only look to generate with that extra water in the middle of the day and not at night?

The trend reversed today, but last 7 days theres a reasonable correlation between the dip in prices and solar generation hours.

My gut feel is still to lock in current FIT for as long as the retailers will let you.

Lakes 10% above historic mean for this time of year.

After getting solar, how long until the novelty wears off and I stop checking the app every 5 minutes to see how it's doing?

It will wear off after a few months, but then you'll relapse as summer arrives.
