jeffnz: so let me get this right, even when its fixed it isn't safe?? just wondering given the amount of people that now want it replaced. Anyway under CGA if it is fixed satisfactorily then that is all they are required to do.

I think what we are saying is that when it is fixed, it is a faulty design that has been corrected. Whether it is corrected and is as safe as any othjer machine is in doubt. Its still a faulty design. Plus, all they do is cover the wiring with plastic and tape it, so i have heard.

Totally love our Samsung washer and would never consider changing it with another brand..... but even though it is not one of the recalled list (nor was the one in the latest fire) I installed a smoke detector in the laundry just in case. Better to be safe than sorry

Just had a serviceman round here to do this repair on our 6.5KG top load machine. It appears our machine already has this modification and we bought it new nearly three years ago.

Same with ours, 3 years old 6.5 KG top load. Serviceman was quite surprised but put a second cover over the top of the existing cover

ok so if its caused by the wiring not being sufficiently insulated and they fix that by taping it then surely if it conforms with safety standards it should be ok.

Sorry just finding it difficult to understand the reasoning here

From what I gather (Mine hasnt been done yet) it isnt a case of a lack of insulation, its that it can condense where the wiring is. The wires may be insulated, but there is no seal to protect exposed wires inside joins from condensation. The wiring should be air sealed from condensation.

Thats expected advise from Consumer NZ, but what is the legal position? Like a CGA dispute (which this isn't) , it would be repair or replace within a reasonable time, thats seems fair

I had mine fixed and now it wont work, only washes nothing else. Was offered a replacement or offered a refund, iv taken the refund as still weary of the fire danger especially with kids in the house who live with their earphones on and probably would not hear a smoke alarm. Yet to see if it all works out. They refund after machine is picked up apparently. They were really friendly to deal with over my concerns.

You would expect their position would be in line with the CGA, as per their own interpretation of it.

You would expect their position would be in line with the CGA, as per their own interpretation of it.

Yes, may well be. They will have the option to repair or replace, they will choose repair

Does anyone know if an RCD should prevent the fire issue? I.e. if sparks to earth then an RCD will trip but if between phase and neutral then it will not.

I believe it still should trip an RCD, I'm not an electrician but I think NZ wiring has a shared neutral/earth rail in the dist board. Someone might correct me on this

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

I think it is the consumers choice. At least it is if a fault is considered 'substantial'.
