UHD: "...we assumed our roof was a cheap iron product with an inferior paint finish." This isn't NZ Steel's fault and if the paint loss was that serious it should have been sorted out years ago. As soon as you moved in, really. Home maintenance is no joke. It is certainly unfortunate that this has happened and also falls just outside of the warranty but you need to acknowledge your maintenance failure and move on IMO.

I think maintenance failure is a bit harsh. We've previously had the roof checked for leaks, replaced loose nails etc. At the time we were advised that there was no urgency for immediate painting as the iron was in ok condition, it's just the paint finish that was failing - which I am now taking care of. As I said in my opening post, it was only during the pre-paint inspection by our roofer that we learned it was Colorsteel.

dafman: Colorsteel...they are sponsors on TV3's The Block.

You say that like it means something!

wellygary: How close are you to that big blue ocean thing I can see in the background,

According. To this if you are more than 1km , the paint warranty is 18 years.

Depending on prevailing wind, etc. it might be considered ISO category 4 which is only 15 years. And I'm guessing that warranty brochure relates to New Zealand Steel's current product range - it may have been a different product manufactured 16 years ago (not Maxx or Enduro) which may or may not have had the same warranty.

NZ Steel have confirmed the 15 year warranty over the phone when they advised me I had just tipped over the notice period.

Inform NZ Steel (in writing) that you will be pursuing this under the CGA.
See if they respond.
Lodge claim.
See if they respond.
Go through with it - I reckon you've got a good chance.

Journeyman: In their eyes, you probably look like somebody who is trying to score a freebie.

To be honest, cost is not the issue. It's actually a small roof and I gave up relatively quickly on NZ Steel once I knew they weren't interested in assisting. The reason I am posting on geekzone is simply to 'socialise' a company who, in my view, doesn't stand by their product. I like to be an informed consumer, so do many others.

They won't take you seriously until you ring to say you are taking them to the disputes tribunal and ask who at NZ Steel should be named in the paperwork.

This is enough with most big companies to get you pass the first step in the call centre where they say no and normally you are passed on to someone who can and will resolve the issue.

The people who answer the phone typically have a script that says "say no", you need to get past them to someone who can make decisions.

If this was as common a problem as you think it may be why does it seem that your roofer seems caught out.

Jase2985: my question is, does a product from 1999 still have the 15 year warranty?

Yes. When I first phoned them, New Zealand Steel confirmed the 15 year warranty and that I was (one year) outside of it.

Did you give them a batch number or some detail from the underside of the roof for them to confirm it was a 1999 manufactured product and thus outside of warranty?

I asked NZ Steel if there was a known problem with any of their product, they replied: As we are unable to determine the end use of our coils it is not possible to determine where the rest of the coil used in your roof has been used and whether any issues have been raised.

I don't believe that a company of this size wouldn't record the batch number of any defective products they've had to replace.  Perhaps your question was too general and should have been "have you had to replace any other roofs from this batch number".  Their answer is an obvious fob off, you don't care WHERE the rest of the coil was used, only if there were any defects

Not sure I understand, my post relates to my issue, I didn't say it was a common problem?

And how was our roofer caught out?

The paint loss on your roof is so complete that it must relate to a fault. I can't see how you'd be alone. Whoever rolled your roof profile from the coil would have other customers with the same problem. I guess whether your roofer had seen this before depends on how many years he's been in the business.

May I suggest getting arial photographs of your roof from previous years and use those. You can them provide evidence that the paint failed before the warranty expired.

PM me the address and Ill see what I can find for you.

We had the exact same problem.
I had our roof professionally blasted, cleaned and then painted.  However a few months late it started to blister, I call the painter back, he came and took a look, he called the original builder (who i knew would just act dumb and have no record of who supplied the roof, typical), called the paint rep who sent samples away for analysis.  In the end, they sand blasted it back to bear metal and repainted at his own cost. (sorry, the paint supplier, provided the paint for free second time around)

In the end, still not that happy with the overall finish, but cant be stuffed going through arguing it out with people.

Our original roof was colour steel, Karaka Green.

Several years of paint missing on bare steel? That is a maintenance failure no matter what anyone says. You wouldn't do the same thing for weather boards or your car, I would hope. The issue is compounded by the fact that you live near the sea and should therefore be even more vigilant.

Trying to put NZ Steel on blast through social media is pretty pathetic given the years of time you had to sort the issue out within the warranty period. All I see is someone who hasn't taken the time to properly maintain their property and a company rightfully refusing to correct an issue at their cost.

We have had colorsteel, 'Sandstone grey' on a roof since 2005, and it is almost as good as new, and I would specify colorsteel again..  I would probably be more wary of some of the imported products that haven't been made specially for NZ conditions. ALso if you are taking water off the roof for drinking, you want it coming off a baked on paint finish, rather than a regular paint finish.

I agree that they should have done something about it when they first noticed the problem. I mean, it didn't get like that overnight.
