Not one single egg available at Countdown in Newtown today.

Well done whoever decided that children and babies who need eggs and will live to age 90 are less important than the welfare of chickens that live for 6-8 years.

How much of this "egg shortage" is the same as the so called toilet paper shortage. Media generated hysteria.

The human egg production produces a better product. We have been eating free range eggs for decades. They are vastly superior to the factory produced product.

Factory production of eggs is disgusting, the industry had a decade to change, those who did survive those who didn't won't, a good thing.

We have not experienced any issues buying eggs The
Countdown in Pito-One had plenty.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Batman:

I'm sure the former battery hens really feel for you.

i find it interesting we care more about chickens' happiness and keeping guinea pigs alive than who mines the cobalt for the electric car battery that will generate you $8650 but fair enough, i will eat fewer eggs for their sake.

So no reform of any market should happen until cobalt mining has been completely made ethical?

What a garbage take.

The industry has known since 2012 that battery cages were going to be banned. How much more notice did they need?

I'm no PETA loving vegan, i even worked in a slaughter house at one point, but battery farming is just cruelty.

That wasn’t what was decided of course.

Nobody absolutely “needs” eggs, you won’t starve if you can’t get them. Many of us want them and the supply chain will stabilise again after a period of time, all the complaining will be forgotten and everyone will wonder what the fuss was about.

The industry knew that battery cages were going from 2022. So battery farms started converting to colony farming to meet that deadline.

In 2019 Foodstuffs and Countdown both said they would only sell free range eggs from 2022.

One farmer I know spent close to $2million converting from battery to colonies by 2018. But then after spending all that money he was told he couldn’t sell his eggs to supermarkets. So he got rid of his hens and is now turning his farm into residential sections.

I don't even understand why we're banning battery farming in the first place. Cheaper food prices for people should always take precedence over any rights that animals allegedly have.

Animal rights activists are a bit like religious zealots to me.. I don't care if you believe in jeebus, the man in the moon, or that animals should have rights, believe what you want, but the minute you try and force your way of life down my throat you can feck right off.

Government banned battery farmed hens, this among other factors indisputably caused a decrease in egg supply, and price increases.

Its lovely that you can afford free range eggs on your good government salary and/or pension.

However, consider those on minimum wage.  Politicians and higher income individuals make these decisions without any consideration for those who can barely afford eggs.

Great that you can afford free range , but, consider those less well off than you too. Factory production is disgusting, but , I value people over chickens.

Would you donate a portion of your income/assets to compensate those who can no longer afford eggs?  I suspect not.

The government did not cause this, they gave a decades notice. Abject failure by the industry created any issues by failing to react, plan and implement change

That is complete rubbish. It has been proven beyond any doubt that eggs are eggs and the manner in which they are produced has no meaningful impact on taste or nutrition.

Eggs will never go back to being cheap, and it IS because of the government no matter what you claim. Prices may ease a little ( I don't believe so though) as supplies increase.

Unless you want to argue free range egg farming is as efficient as battery farming?

It doesn't seem overly kind to tell the poor (usually larger families too) that they just can't eat eggs anymore.

Directly no, indirectly - yes they did.

Disagree. Most of the current issues have been caused by the supermarket duopoly acting all high and mighty and refusing to sell colony eggs at a point in the transition where was it too late or too expensive for suppliers to adjust.

Haha, can't agree with you here. Mum has free range chooks, and their eggs definitely taste better. They have a deeper orange colour, and the yolk has a richer flavour than store bought eggs.

However, I'm not sure, maybe it could be attributed to just being fresher? I don't know, but, they taste better for sure.
