the elephant in the room

my wife told me somebody did something (till today I have no clue whose idea it was - was it some legislation or something?) to help chickens and now our egg prices have more than doubled - not happy!

anyone starting to keep chickens for eggs?

We have decided to keep chickens again.
My complaint last time was the wife and kids named them, so they became pets...
Not allowed to replace when they stopped laying.
This time will be different 😁

If you set up self watering and feeding systems they are really low maintenance and will eat all your kitchen scraps.

If you want to have livestock, at some stage you'll have to deal with deadstock.

My local PnS has trays of 20 eggs for $19.99.. prices have in fact gone a bit insane most places.

Unless you discard a LOT of kitchen scraps each day, I guarantee you'll spend more on feed, setting up and maintenance than what you'd ever spend on eggs.

We have chickens, they eat all day, poop all day, and lay eggs occasionally if it's not too cold. We've spent several hundred over the last couple of years on their enclosure, feeding mechanisms and feed: that would have bought a lot of eggs. But for us it was about the lifestyle and having kids grow up knowing where their food comes from.

And sadly, yes, they all now have names. 😟

Pak n Save Rotorua

Rotorua has many people on low incomes, I wonder if they price lower due to that?

Eggs at our Paknsave cost at least 1/3 more, the other day a 10 pack of eggs cost me $10.49, from paknsave. Same deal a year ago would be $7.00 maybe.

the new caging requirements etc came in, plus some supermarkets decided to buy only freerange etc, so some places have called it quits etc. bit of a tight egg supply at the moment.

please don't keep chickens because eggs are a bit pricier than normal. we really get sick of dumped chickens/ducks/sheep/whatever the latest fad is.

Frenzy time, no eggs. Called them, no idea. Went nearby the next day, popped in to see empty shelves, but they were there, got 18 pack. Last time picking up bits and bobs, check eggs, 3 there so got 1 pack, limit 1. Its obviously variable but check them before you run out , probably be fine-sih, it will sort it self out. If desperate Id tend to pop in on a weekday, early-ish

Interesting though, when they are there and not many, there are heaps of brands. So they will trickle in I expect.
