New and improved hobby space / indoor workshop:

This was the kitchen in a downstairs granny flat to our house. I forgot to take a proper before shot, but this will give you an idea of the full 1970s horror of mustard yellow floral formica walls, bright yellow benchtop, dark woodwork and slate grey lino:

Quite a lot of time, but only cost a few hundred dollars, and most of that was for the new beech fingerjointed countertops. And additional pegboard hooks and plier holders. Kitchen cabinetry was salvaged from a demolition and made to fit, new handles were on sale, paint and lino was leftovers from other things.

Wow, you've done wonders with the place.......

But actually you have made a massive improvement. The old bench top looks exactly the same as that in my childhood home.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

I showed some friends the planned tiling for the new laundry in the Casa de Cowboy. Their comment was "it would look really nice if your house had been built around about 1880". So I guess that's a no then...

Here's what we found under the tiles in the entrance:

The white blobs are where they'd laid adhesive to glue the slate tiles to the lino. The horror. The horror.

Nearly finished sorting out my new garage. Just got to fill all the cupboards and sort our all the network cables.

You never need to explicitly fill up cupboards. Just sit back and wait a few weeks and you'll find they'll have filled themselves with all manner of crap you never recall even owning.

was actually a good chance to clear out a lot of that crap from the old garage.

For about $11 you can get security double lipped latches. We just did about 2/3 the windows in our house. They just replace the existing latches, let in some air (ventilation) and can't be broken into either.

We've got those on some windows, but there are others that we want to open to maximum capacity most of the time, except when it rains, and most window stays restrict the opening to a very narrow range. While you can get latches that you can unhook to allow the window to open fully, they're a royal pain to fiddle with and look ugly. The milled wood stay is out of sight most of the time since the window is swung fully open.

I should post the project I did for the tube headphone amp I built based on the Crack Amp and Speedball upgrade. It was fantastic fun, I learned a lot.

For years we've had 3 pieces of used timber across some old concrete blocks as overflow seating in our outdoor area. Since I didn't go away at Xmas/NY, I had some time to make the 3 boards into this bench seat using 2 fence posts that were left over from another project.

I have the smallest cheapest Ryobi drop saw available ($99, > 10 years old) and I've never been happy with the quality of the cuts it can do (or I can so with it). For this project, I went and spent $75 on a 60 tooth blade and then I spent some time cutting wood into pieces so thin I could bend them :-)

The legs are 100 mm fence posts and the saw blade is 210 mm so I needed to rotate the the posts 4 times to cut them. The saw is obviously not a goer for more of this work.

I used nail plates because the aim was a quick project and I didn't want to be messing around with blind dowels or tenons or whatever.

If I had a proper saw, I'd do a more complicated cut on the top of the front leg in order to conceal the cross piece.

$20 upgrade to drill press to make it easy to raise and lower the table.

Another barely-counts thing, but very useful in that annoying situation where you need to paint into an area that's a bit constrained and you end up wiping the brush around sideways in a desperate attempt to get at least some paint into at least some of the target area: The Very Short Brush for Tight Spaces:
