bfginger: If you do buy something Miele buy it from a New Zealand owned retailer. Miele sells whiteware on commission so if you buy direct or through Harvey Norman's that's a large bag of money being sent out of the country for no reason.

AFAIK Harvey Norman's is a franchise operation. I've dealt with 2 stores and found they had different owners.

Get one with a cutlery drawer at the top. Miele do them. They are a game changer.

How so ? surely its easier to just chuck cutlery in a basket than putting them in one by one ?

No - HN is owned by the original family group and not franchised. They're just managed differently from branch to branch, probably.

Harvey Norman stores have a 'Proprietor' but they don't own the store. Similar to a franchise owner, but they haven't bought the store (or paid to set it up).

That's how I think it works (happy to be corrected though)

Agreed!

Can fit in large knives, spatulas etc, so much more cutlery, and it always gets clean vs bits stuck on in the basket.

Also - had a Miele dishwasher for 8 years or so now. Love it.

I knew a guy once that paid a HN store to have the business to sell furniture within the store. Sounds like a weird mixed model.

Could be, it seems like the franchise operation is only in Australia. I got the run around when I tried returning a new product that was DOA to a different store. They whinged so much about all the paperwork they'd have to do I gave up and took it back to the original store.

Currently looking at the Bosch serie 4/6 and the Beko.

I see Beko is one of the leading brands in Europe and also offers 5 year manufacturers warranty and 10 year waranty on the motor which other makers do not.

I am actually replacing a 30 year old Smeg that has been a real workhorse, never had to replace anything or fix anything, but the issue now after 30 years is the open handle has a crack in it.

Anyone had any experience with Beko? I just want something with longevity that doesn't require firmware upgrades or rely on apps that might eventually stop getting supported.

not with a Beko dishwasher, but we've had, and thrashed, a Beko washing machine for the last 6 and a bit years. It hasn't missed a beat (touch wood). We bought one for the kids and they do way more laundry than us (young kids) and theirs has been fine as well.

You may think so, and I initially thought this could be the case too,  but I don't find that an issue. PLus the drawer allows the cleaning of shallow things which are often difficult to put in a dishwasher.  Plus you can group them in the drawer, so when they are clean, you don't have to sort through them all, they can go straight back in the drawer.  PLus they are always clean as they don't touch, which was often not the case with a basket, as often cutlery touched and food got stuck between them, especially spoons. Plus you have a lot more additional space, as the pull out drawer is at the very  top, so there isn't a  basket using up part of the bowl or plate  space. Plus you don't have to bend down to put them in, the drawer is at the top above the cup drawer so a comfortable height.

Bosch as well. Much better than the old basket design.

WE used to have a bosch and it didn't have one,  Is it just higher models or newer models?. The  cutlery basket in the bosch  was always a bit of a problem with the basket. Bits of dried food stuck to stuck, and food also tended to collect in the bottom of the basket. Some people pre-rinse stuff before putting it in the dishwasher, but I never saw the point of that, except for things with egg, as that makes everything smell fishy afterwards.

Ours is an SMU68 from 2012, looks like it cost us $2K on special. It's had one repair in that time, to the external handle.

If you'd like to spend an hour hearing about dishwashers, with an emphasis on detergents, then these are your videos

Detergent packs are kinda wishy-washy (Dishwashers Explained)

I messed up. You're using too much detergent.

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of our trusty Miele G572 diswasher, after almost 29 years of faithful service.

During the weekend it ran it's last cycle, failing to heat water, and leaking into the driptray below the washing cabinet.

The cause of death was a corroded element, which finally ruptured, and most probably caused the leak.  While this may have been repairable, if we could source an element for a 29 year old appliance, it was starting to show its age and we decided it would be a mercy to release it to the recycle station in the sky.  It has already graciously donated some of it's components to our pile of spare parts, and will no doubt live on in some capacity through future projects.

A brief private service was held with other grieving appliances.

May it rest in pieces.

Inherited a brand new LG dishwasher that came with our house. It has the flat cutlery tray in the top which I have removed to allow the top cup tray to be raised to its highest level and still fit wine glasses, and allowing larger dinner plates to fit in the bottom tray. Had to find a 3rd party cutlery basket and jam it into the bottom tray.

The default power on cycle is 3 hours which is ridiculous.

Would not recommend.
