Prices are somewhat high in the North Island right now, exceedingly low in the south, and there doesn't appear to be any power going across the cook straight. I wonder if there's a cable failure, or planned maintenance?

In the email about no bills for the next week there is such two paragraphs:

As you know, on January 5 we introduced a revised price schedule with new tariffs to reflect Wellington Electricity’s request of all retailers to no longer offer lower overnight (11pm - 7am) lines charges, except to those with a very specific meter setup.

Your meter configuration means that you will continue receiving lower overnight lines charges on your eligible meters, however we are working through testing related to the new tariffs for other customers, so we’re still getting everything set-up for your first bill with these charges.

And I cannot interpret it: they state that my meter configuration WILL allow me having the lower overnight lines charges as before, while on the "today" graph the overnight prices are definitely just about the same as daily ones.

So, does anyone know what they exactly mean by that?

For the overland section there are two circuits which are on the same towers.

One of the towers (near Blenheim) was damaged in the Kaikoura earthquake and subsequently when wind at Blenheim was above 80 kmh they were treating the HVDC BIPOLE as a contingent event (no self-cover). This is what drove the high prices over Wednesday / Thursday with the high winds.

Today is a one day outage to relocate those cables off the damaged tower and onto a temporary tower so as to give more certainty. Should be finished around 1900 and normal $40 - $50 prices will resume operation.

Basically it depends on the register type (which is part of the metering configuration) which Wellington Electricity was vague about in their pricing docs (indicating if you had a Smart metre you could take advantage of the overnight rates).

I'll try to come back later and explain in more detail.

So glad I'm on off peak pricing all weekend. And lucky the weather is overcast and windy right now. So more wind generation and less air conditioning load. Also the Huntly coal generators are not going. But the diesel generator is. Hope they will start the coal generators for the evening peak otherwise we will see some crazy prices. The outage is not scheduled to finish until 1930.

HLY1 & HLY2 (the Rankine dual fuel units (coal & gas)) are on outage I think till the end of January, you won't see them turn on.

If by diesel generator you mean HLY6 that's a gas turbine (open cycle / fast start) unit. The only diesel gen in NZ of a significant scale is Whirinaki which I doubt would run (typically only gets turned on if prices are sustained at >$230 for an hour or so).

Is there anything special about your meter setup that might explain why you still get the preferential pricing ? Has anyone asked what changes would have to be made to get them back again? My charges are flatline across an average day now.

That's because supply outstrips demand most days, maybe because there's a minimum flow the hydro stations need to put through. Look at days where there's high demand, there's still peaks. If we ever get a summer you might see some small evening spikes for cooling, but when winter hits you'll see high prices in peak times again.

Initially few years ago I connected to the genesis energy in a house that has the meter configured for day/night plans.

Then after I moved to a current house I was notified by them, that the meter in the new house is configured differently and the day/night plans are not available for me. I spent some time and could reach the level 2 support engineer who explained me everything more precisely and with more tech details (I forgot almost everything since then though), but in short I was told that I need an electrician to come to my place and physically reconfigure it (this kind of change cannot be done remotely). AFAIR this generally costs ~$60, but I was lucky enough to get it for free (since I initially signed for the fixed term day/night plan).

This is the only possible difference (or change applied to the default meter configuration) that I am aware of.

PS: I am also seeing the flat price (on the daily price graph), but in 2 latest bills those are definitely different.

Android v7.1.1 here, and it runs fine. When v6 was the thing it was also running fine.
