i had Contact Energy ring me on a cold call to save money on my power bill. i am with pulse and said good luck . The lady went through the plan to compare the two and at the end all she said was how is pulse doing it that cheap and pretty much hung up, in fact every company that has called me havent come close to what Pulse gives me and i would switch in a heartbeat if someone was cheaper.. Just a thought to people who want cheap power, look at pulse if they are in your Area.

Is that still true with post 1st april rates?

Pulse was a great deal for me before that date, but they put up my kWh price by 12%, so now I am shopping, and finding better rates.

It seems EK still has low user rates at 30 cents +gst per month. So not sure if they are changing that. I have been with power shop for about 4 months and it appears they have doubled the low user rate up to 69cents a day from 34.5c last month which is quite a big increase. But what is more annoying is that the per unit rate seems to increase each month heading into winter. But their disclosure of pricing in the app for the current kW charge isn't great and it is difficult to understand. I will have to look at EK rates again, and their app is better. The $200 stay ahead bonus offered quite a good % saving. There is also Flick and Frank energy for power. I am not a big power user and not at home everyday, so don't think the free hour would provide much benefit to me at the moment.

Something else to note also is Contact have a higher kWh charge so depending on your normal use the Good Nights plan may well work out more expensive.

Good Nights (incl GST):
Charged: Midnight - 9pm 30.82c/kWh
Free: 9pm - Midnight Free
Daily Charge 1.133c/day
Electricity Authority Levy 0.15c/kWh

EK Movemaster (incl GST - plus an hour free):
Peak usage: $0.2949 per kWh
Off-peak shoulder usage: $0.2138 per kWh
Off-peak night usage: $0.1475 per kWh
Fixed cost of: $1.5600 per day

Contact also have a fixed term meaning if power prices go down you'll still be paying the higher kWh charge - I've always personally found EK OK when it comes towards pricing and they do seem to be the lowest cost provider for my use - I got a notification that 83.37% of my power use falls during off-peak, plus it is nicer having the shoulder use as I normally work from home. So don't fall for the 3hrs free if you're a higher user as you'll often find it hard to move power use to the 3 hours to off-set the higher kWh charge.

Those MoveMaster rates look like where they were for me in Wellington when it was released, but for me the peak is about 22c, shoulder 14c, off-peak 11c. What city is that for?

We just moved to Frank, we'd had a good run with Vocus - no other supplier got close to their rates in our location for quite some time but they had quite a big hike due for April and didn't offer solar buyback (which we're considering).  We were also looking for another company that offered night rates. I asked them if they had plans for increases in April as well and they said there wasn't any at that stage but they were aware many competitors were indicating price increases, so I imagine it's on the cards once they have an idea of where the market settles. There's a $50 referral credit here if Frank works for you: https://frankenergy.co.nz/

You mean in the post yesterday copied below? Yes, inc GST. Though when I average it across two quite warm days (I've only just changed to MoveMaster) it's 11.5c/kwh inc GST. That will go up as the cold snap hits tomorrow and we use more heating during the day. Those two days did include four loads of washing and drying on the shoulder period, but also a lot of heating and clothes drying in the free hour.

I worked out that today on EK MoveMaster my average price per kwh is 12.9c inc GST, counting the free hour. Not bad :)

Hmm, just checked the Movemaster rates in Wellington and mine show as the same very low rates. It's a bit strange that even the peak rate is lower than on Electric Kiwi's other schemes - I'm not sure why anyone would choose one of those.

Including GST for a standard user, I see:

Loyal Kiwi at $0.2261/kwH plus fixed cost of $2.29/day

Kiwi at $0.2378/kwH plus fixed cost of $2.29/day

and Movemaster Peak $0.2201, Offpeak shoulder $0.1414 and off-peak overnight at $0.1101, plus fixed cost of $2.24/day

If that's not a mistake, I might need to switch our household over from Flick!

Thanks to those here who posted about the EK MoveMaster plan; I'd never heard of it prior and thought it was worth calculating the differences between our current EK plan (stay ahead 200) and this.

EK supplied me with a couple of months of data in spreadsheets, which shows that the MoveMaster plan would have been 11% cheaper in that high-use winter month and 12% in an off-season month. Not huge savings, but given we're going to trial running the ducted heat pump on low overnight this winter the differential will be greater (I calculated a couple of nights when we did run the heater overnight in July, and the MoveMaster price would have been cheaper by 19%).

We're currently on a low user plan, and the rates they've given us are also for a low user (total use is just over the cusp - 8124 units in the last twelve months - however only paid for 5730, so very much a low user as far as being with EK). Does anyone know what EK's plans are re phasing out of low user plans?

Did you allow the 10% CC credit on Stay Ahead?

Yep, the stay ahead credit is included in my calculations, but I calculated it as a 9.1% discount (ie, it's getting $220 worth of power for $200, so as a proportion the discount is 20/220).

Are you old fairly old rates that haven't been reviewed/updated in years? For me their signup/find my price estimate gives a higher daily rate than Electric Kiwi move master and almost high kWh rate as their peak time rate.

Sadly our nice low fixed 2019ish rates with Meridian are expiring, Frank and Electric Kiwi Move Master are looking like the best options currently (for around ~800 kWh usage per 30 days in Auckland). Will be around $20 more per month than our old rates but not too bad for 3 years of inflation and current market conditions.
