Of course I am moving because of seemingly better conditions and much cheaper rates compared to some private firms. Is there any reason why I shouldn't or would anyone say NZI (or whoever) is better?

For 150k contents I was quoted 535 PA (their best policy) with match carpet cover, $250 excess
For 950k rebuild (that was the highest I could ask for without spending money on goons with a tape measure) I was quoted 1300+ PA (their best policy) with no excess on glass, $450 excess

Hmm ...

Have been with AMI for a number of years now; house, contents, cars and boat...no issues to date - including the loss of one car.

thanks. would a change of ownership (IAG) make it any worse? (when one pays an insurance company the measure of a good one is one that pays out)

If anything IAG buying AMI was the best outcome

IAG have also purchased Lumley so they're not short on cash it seems

I've only had good experiences with AMI.

Had a couple of claims in the last 5 years. One of claims I was wondering if they might get a bit picky (my 5 year old caused significant damage, don't ask how!!) but they came through.

One potential downside is that they're choosey about insuring specific makes & models of vehicle...

I note that you haven't mentioned motor vehicle insurance in your question, but you may find yourself having to shop around for another insurer if you ever buy a car that they don't approve of.

Just something to keep in mind :-)

(I just walked a potential $1m+ of coverage out their door last week because they were unable to accommodate a $30k vehicle)

I was with AMI for years and found them really good, i only left them because they dropped the no excess on prescription glasses which in a family of 5 with 3 kids, all with glasses, is a necessity.

They wouldn't insure turbo cars before I turned 25.

When I was 30 I went back to then with a Subaru sti of all cars ... no questions asked

Interesting; I had an Evo 3 insured through them, while I was mid 20's with zero issues...they didn't care about the modifications (full exhaust, chipped, high flowed turbo, boost controller, custom airbox, gauges, sounds); it was just list them on the policy and it's sorted...was expecting silly high premiums, but no dramas. Maybe they just know I am just a saint :)
