Do wall mounted bathroom heaters have to be hard wired or can you use the plug in to the socket type?

Likewise, is there something special about heaters called bathroom heaters or will any wall mounted heater do?

Never mind! A few hours googling says buy a heater classed for a bathroom. It's replacing one already hard wired. I wonder why bathroom heaters don’t have timers?

Make sure you buy a decent one. I purchased a Goldair from M10. It's now a Rustair.

An appropriately-rated hardwired timer is always an option - hide the pullcord on the heater.

In general as long as it's not inside any of the classified zones, you *could* install a socket and a separate heater, but it would look naff and you might void the heater's warranty ('corrosion caused by damp situations not covered').

Yes and now this is my present problem.
It's going to replace the venerable Skope.

Anybody had any luck picking a good bathroom heater? One that lasts?

edit to add: scanned threads, no help. Anyone?

Pretty sure we've got this model Goldair bathroom heater:

Cheap and it works. It's been there for at least 8 years, seldom used, hasn't rusted at all, but the room does have a reasonably grunty extractor so doesn't get much condensation.

Seldom gets used these days because if it's cold then the exhaust fan for the bathroom sucks warm air for the hallway with a heat pump in and warms the bathroom faster than the heater if the door had been left closed, or the bathroom is already warm anyway if the door had been left open.

It's on a wall switch rather than the pull cord which was removed, looped off (the protected circuit) from an RCD power point.

The Weiss fan heater we installed in 2014 is still going strong and looks more or less like new. Interestingly enough it actually comes with a plug fitted, which has to be cut off to hard wire it.

We just use heat lamps as part of the extractor fan to heat our bathroom.

We chose our heated towel rails from the wide selection available at www.plumbingworld.co.nz and incorporated into our home automation system.

Yeah I'm sorta trying to decide how much to spend. That Skope was bought around 2005 so it was good value for money! But sometimes the middle of the road models of most stuff gives you the best bang.

I think serene is the replacement brand, which is almost identical to the skope cheaper model, but they don't do the more premium model they used to do. They do a stainless one. The options are more limited these days for bathroom heaters unless you go cheap.

I like the idea of a stainless one. My Skope was white, no idea what kind of metal but it has zero rust. The corners of my metal light fixture, which is also white is showing a bit of rust tho! Our bathroom gets pretty wet.

Update, got the Serene. So far nice and warm. Hope it lasts as long as the old Skope did.

I just have a plug in one in my bathroom. Fan heaters are so cheap that when it looks grotty or the fan gets noisy, no high cost or hassle to replace it.

Also can be re aimed for when using the loo and its damn cold in there.

I would do that but I don’t trust the spouse to turn it off and we have a young dog as well.
