Hi, brought my mum a new chromecast she has a technocolour modem through vodafone, i got into the modem changed the settings to DNS4ME, i can watch iplayer on the table but as soon as i cast it comes up cant play 2100?.It works at home fine with the DNS4Me, any ideas? i shouldnt have to block dns?

What is iplayer 2100 when it's at home?

If you are using Chromecast you have to block google dns servers ( dns4me has some guides on how to set this up).
As soon as you hand over to a Chromecast ( cast to a Chromecast), it tries to use Google dns to work out where you are. The google dns ( if not blocked) says you are in nz and you will get blocked.

If you block google dns servers it will fall back to your default dns servers ( dns4me) which should say you are in the UK.

What device are you using to cast with? If an iPhone or ipad you just need the iplayer app from the UK apple app store and block the Google design on your router.

Thanks for the quick reply 2100 is the error message I get when I try and cast a program from bbc , I thought only had to block dns for netflix for chromecast? I have an hg659 modem at home and block from the parental option and it works, I couldn't work out where to block for my mums technicolor TC 7210 modem , using a samsung tab e to cast

Sorry meant to add can i do a static route on this type of modem, or can i block dns in the perental section using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4?

Pretty sure you will find as soon as the chromecast starts working, any app (bbc iplayer in this case) use google DNS work out where it is - it reports as not being in the UK and it stops.

No idea about this router I am afraid.

iPlayer worked for me if I set the Chromecast and the TV to UK time zone. I also had to have the device i was casting from (phone, PC, whatever) set to UK time zone. This assumes you're also using a DNS proxy.

That used to work....a couple of months ago. I haven't bothered doing it for a while.

Shortly we'll need a UK TV license number to access iPlayer. Hopefully some enterprising person will do a "YouShop" style "local address" and helps us buy one.

I can get to work at home by adding the google dns to the parental block on a huawei modem, but no luck on the technicolour cable, one dont want to buy another modem unless i really have to. Might have to have another go next weekend

I might give setting the chromecast to uk and see if that works, was trying to save her some money by ditching sky

Try pinging the Google Dns server 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 from a PC connected to the network. If it times out then you will be successfully blocking the chromecast from accessing Google server. . If it doesn't time out, then that will be the problem.

Might be worth a new post - something like 'how to block google dns on a technicolour router'.
Someone may have an idea if it can be done.

I just tried iPlayer via a Unotelly UK VPN. I see the iPlayer logo on my TV when using Chrome browser set and the "cast" icon on the player but when I try to cast it the player stops playing, when I click play again it just plays on the local PC but not on the TV set .

Basically you either block by setting up static routes in the router, or you block it using parental controls. Some routers are difficult to find where to do it and the best approach.
