Parents Samsung (2013 model) smart TV now has Netflix.

Set it up with US Netflix, Lightbox, TVNZ On Demand and 3now - made a shortcut on their Logitech Harmony remote for the Smart Hub (they've never used it) and they're stoked!

It showed up on my Sony Home Theater the other day, hasn't shown up yet on my 2012 Samsung smart tv

Just popped up on our Samsung Blu-Ray player. Just leads to a page which asks you to put in your email so Netflix can let you know when the service will be available. Don't have unotelly etc to use US netflix.

Now show's up on our 2013 F series TV. Put my login details in and away it went. Have getflix with Netflix set to UK. Not keen on the interface and prefer using the amazon fire tv.

hashbrown: After the launch we should do a name and shame of the vendors who don't support their older/cheaper devices. I'm picking $100 panasonic blu-ray I bought last year won't get support even though the overseas variant has it.

I can't find it on my LG TV which is at least 2013, not that old. Looked in the smart hub for it.

Yet on my PS3 firmware update and it's there. It's one first PS3's out, before the slim so 5 years plus old, yet on a TV under two years no support for it.

Doesn't surprize me when everything they have except for a couple of Dr Who eps is in SD. I only use them because the are on my TiVo and I am currently going thru the back catalog of Andromeda

No surprise here either. They seem to have steadfastly refused to step up to the plate in terms of content and quality. I almost choked with laughter when I read they want their small (and shrinking) customer base to buy shares. Wonder how they marketed it: "Have money you want to throw away? - We can guarantee no returns and no refunds!"

Quickflix's latest quarterly report to the ASX, published yesterday, showed the Aussie service had 136,670 customers at the end of the quarter in December. Some 117,106 of these were paying customers - the rest were free triallists.

Didn't some Aussie newspaper publish there were an estimated 200,000 Australians using DNS / vpn to get Netflix. Seems laughable that something that is not marketed and "not straight forward for the less than average user to get" has supposedly nearly double the membership.

Just another loss for the investors to fund, that makes it about 9 in a row now.

If they were "inviting members" to buy shares, smells like their real investors have put away the cheque book. I posted somewhere here that quickflix would be gone by the end of 2016, maybe I was too optimistic on the timeframe.

I know some in the (rapidly shrinking) dvd rental market are rather nervous about netflix and expect it to be the final nail in the coffin, expect to see even less stores after winter.

"Less" or "fewer"? I suspect the few stores that remain will be trying hard to improve their offerings, not lessen them. Here endeth the lesson.

DVD rental places need to up their game as well instead of getting themselves bogged down in their traditional thinking. Netflix don't have new releases. Smart marketing is the name of the game here.

Age has a lot less to do with it - it is all about the numbers!! There will be millions more PS3's out there than the sub-2 year old model of TV you have. Logical they'd push out to PS3 and similar platforms earlier on.

If there was a solution to the decline of the DVD rental industry, I think it would have come to light long before now. Blockbuster would still be alive and Video Ezy wouldnt have gone from 160 stores to 90 in the space of about 3 years.

Innovative marketing can help but not for the majority and for those it may help, at what cost?

There is not enough money solely in new release product for any DVD store to survive, all stores rely on catalog rentals and other income sources to make a profit. We were a reasonably strong new release store and even then, NR product accounted for 60-70% of DVD rental revenue, with the balance of overall revenue coming from games, catalog rentals, ex rental product sales and other retail sales.

If you don't have mom / dad bringing in the kids most weeks to get their 5 - 10 "keep them quiet" movies, stores will simply not be there in the future.

3 biggest killers for rental stores is lease costs, franchise fees and global wrming.

- Landlords want more and more return (and why shouldn't they) but even a small increase in rent equates to an awful lot of extra DVD rentals just to cover the increase, let alone make more profit
- Franchise holders aren't budging from their antiquated ways, taking up to 7% of turnover in fees (usually 4 - 5% franchise fee and 2% "marketing). Where once franchise groups got good buying advantages with rental product, the direct to retail model now adopted has eliminated that and there is almost zero advantage belonging to a franchise (from a product purchasing perspective). Often it was cheaper for me to go to the warehouse and buy the product off their shelves than it was to order through Roadshow / Universal / Sony etc. As stores are coming off contract, they are switching to non franchise options (like Network Video and MovieHQ). Interestingly, the VideoEzy contracts have restraint of trade clauses which prevent a Video Ezy store coming off contract to rebrand as anything else.

- Global warming. There is simply no better way to bring masses of customers in the door than rain, especially on weekends and / or public holidays, it has the potential to increase turnover by 100% on the right day and store owners forever live in hope of a decent stormy Saturday. I have loved this summer, long, hot dry, bring on the sun, but this 12 months ago would have had me tearing my hair out sweating as to how I was going to pay wages and the rent and the tax man and the suppliers and put food on the table.........

Sorry for the offtopic rant, I think its sad that the DVD rental industry is coming to an end, Blu-ray is still the best viewing experience, but damned if Netflix in HD isnt a very very close 2nd....

Netflix may not, but other sources do. We rent all our new release movies from iTunes now. Same cost as the old brick and mortar video store, but far more convenient.
