afe66: Any idea why it lesser content at launch?
I'm mean it's been talked about for a long time.
Why launch with lesser content then add more a month or two later... Why not delay the launch by those couple of months and launch with more content ?
Is it a sneaky way of checking your infrastructure is good enough ? Ie don't get huge deluge joining at once vrs gradual increase in subscribers over few months as content expands ?
Problem with smallr launch content is surely some will join, be disappointed by content and cancel ??

rbel038: Im hoping there will be some good kiwi flicks on there atleast to make it interesting. Once were Warriors etc.. It will be interesting to see if all the Netflix Originals make it across , not sure if lightbox has exclusivity to some of these.
Either way one positive is that i can run another unblocking server for free with a spare box :)

lesser content because they are still working on acquiring programming rights
they would be foolish to delay launching, giving Lightbox and Sky Neon etc more time to acquire customers

More customers means more money to buy content.
Just like lightbox, they launched without all the content, and with only a few devices, and have been adding both over the past 6 months. (The lighbox PS3 app is excellent)
It would be pretty stupid to delay and delay until everything is in place, better to launch and then add stuff over time.
As for the people who get disappointed and cancel, if they k now more content gets added regularly, then it gives them a reason to come back and try again. :)
I think even though it will be lesser content, people are still going to be disappointed in the content library.
I mean, just look at how people scoffed at lightbox spending $20m on content in the first year. (Vs sky spending $250m)
Imaging if Netflix spends $40m, doubling light boxes content spend.
If Netflix is charging $10/month, they need 400k customers to repay JUST the content cost (not to mention marketing, opex, infrastructure costs etc)
Given there is 1.3m broadband connections in Nz, and 2-3 major competitors, that is an extremely ambitious target. Not likely to be achieved for 5 years
So I suspect their content spend will be more like light boxes spend, around $20m, since getting to 200k seems more reasonable, and it will be a mix of movies and TV shows, rather than just TV which is what lightbox is. (Which means the TV will likely be worse than lightbox has)
But anyway, even if you take Netflix, lightbox, and neon, it is STILL going to be cheaper than sky basic, which when you think about it, shows how poor sky's offering really is.
TeaLeaf: ive looked at the rest of the nz options. well over priced. rather watch on demand and hire weekly blu rays from the dvd shop. so will wait until netflix.
id really like an online product that offered lots of of HD documentaries in one place. none of the subscription based ones do anything but tv shows, some old, and some old movies. dont see the point.
blu rays are cheaper at the video shop than online HD vids, crazy.
