Agree, it is an ideal opportunity for a real time trial. even though it wont reach the dizzy heights of an AB match, its an ideal tester from Japan. Theoretically, if Netflix can stream via CDN to 300,000+ users most nights, across multi RSP's there should be no issue.

The issue will be managing devices that are not capable of 60fps

It would also be a good test on Sparks handling of customer complaints regarding the performance of the streams... If netflix fails to work I shrug my shoulders and do something else... if Live or OD sport fails I get really annoyed as I'm likely to read/be told about the results if I'm not super careful... Given the fragmented nature of online streaming in relation to ownership of all the issues that can manefest they should be using these opportunities to look at the metrics and develop FAQs, CRM replies to help especially as many people will be used to Sky single fault issue, i.e. Satellite dish > coax cable > Sky Box; single ownership and easy fault finding.

The percentage of issues reported in this thread and other locations that are to do with 60FPS device Streaming problems (as opposed to number of people affected), vs other issues is pretty low.

The issue will be if all the moving parts that make up SS, can deliver at the same time over a sustained period under load.

The acid test is the number of people affected IF there is an issue. If it's everyone or most people, it's a SS issue, if it's a couple of people complaining about this and that, then it's more likely a localized end user issue.

To be fair, it was Spark Sports handling of this issue that made it such a big deal. In a knee jerk reaction they killed 60FPS for everyone rather than leaving it turned on and allowing those who were having issues to switch to 30FPS, or sending out an email with a list of devices that weren't working properly and letting people know if they had one of those devices they were likely to experience issues. Add to this the appalling level of communication and it became a far bigger mess than it should have been.

It doesn't really to me, instill confidence about what happens if the RWC gets the wobbles for them. I am guessing if the first game isn't a resounding success re delivery (for whatever reason), then they will pull the pin and send everything to TVNZ or Sky. It would be the right thing to do.

I dont disagree. If 30fps was not used as a cover all tool, then SS would have started off ok, had a few, and there were very few, teething issues, website got more tidied up, +10 - 10 arrived, ATV4 arrived, all the while we watched very nice quality sport feeds. It would have been whats expected from a startup. Slightly bumpy but works well

Cool. Does that include existing content? Eg if I played content already there for a few weeks will it be 60fps?

No, only content first streamed from whatever time it started is 60fps, not existing

Surely, it was sent in 60FPS (or equivalent), and if that's true. Could the assets not be re-encoded? Otherwise they should label content delivered in 30FPS so people understand that it looks crappy because of that, not because of a CURRENT issue with the platform?

The feed is taken from the source, sent to iSP (iStreamPlanet), produced in say 30fps and its then available, via your ISP through Akamai. If it was easy or cheap to re encode I guess they could, but what's the demand for live sports once the game/event is over? No doubt like everything there is an extra cost. Plus it wont look crappy for low end devices, which is why 30fps arrived. Like many, I was miffed, but its sorted now

Now I need to decide if I will use SkySportNow or not. Ironically, while Spark Sport is now slightly above Sky quality, SSN is below Sky satellite quality. Enough to be annoying

I expect SSN to dramatically improve over the coming months, personally. I am miffed it's an extra cost for STB subscribers esp since the "included for free" streaming platform still looks like crap. Kayo is cheaper and as good as anything else I've seen so Sky will need to make it attractive.

Reasonable points made re rewatching older events encoded at the lower frame rate.

I guess we wait and see what's going to happen.

Exactly. I pay for Sky, so why cant I get the existing SSN? I find Sky Go, very good now on a tablet. SSN is very very good on a tablet. Why can't I have that? I hope they improve SSN on the big screen, its not quite good enough. If I decide to keep full Sky as I get value from the other content, I deserve to get the better tablet version.
