mattwnz: If it was rugby, it would be a national outrage, and be a front page story. Maybe people should vote with their feet and boycott it. I mean if noone signs up for it, the people who bid for the rights will hardly bid for it again, if they make a loss on it, and then sky may get it back next year?

I don't get what the big deal is? Sky has a history for not bidding on football content until the competition is midway through. They are in the middle of doing this with the Confederations Cup, U20 World Cup and other football events. They stall and stall and stall so they can drive the price down.

It is about time they have a competitor in NZ regardless of how flawed the business case may be here.

It also strikes me that 75-odd quid for all 380 games is remarkably cheap. In the UK, BTVision has rights to 38 games (and uses this to sell its broadband), but the other games are BSkyB only - 40-odd quid a month. Might be a good time to hold stock in a New Zealand proxy server?

$150 is about right for a online package as the provider knows full well that no one is going to watch all 380 games. The issue here is that this is the primary way to get access whereas in just about every other country in the world primary access is through a PAYTV provider. And added to that with PAYTV the cost is usually bundled in with other sports as a package

The people who own the rights have all the rights so they could charge more but as NZ population is small and Football although widely played is not one of the most popular viewing sports they have price points.

However I would think a reasonable portion of those that used to watch the EPL on SKY did so as well as watching Rugby, Cricket, League, Motorcar Racing etc. These are the people who will make or break this experiment. Which I find strange they are doing in a country with a poor internet service.

Jas, I am unfortunately one of those people. I watch Rugby, Formula 1, Nascar, Indycar and a number of other sports including the Pheonix. Despite being a Man Utd fan (born in the Borough of Trafford, greater manchester) I cannot fathom spending more money to watch a sport that was included in a package before.

Again, all that has happened is that we lost one monopoly for another less inconvinent to access one.

The theory is that Sky TV should be charging us less now that something they charged us for previously is not included.

Sky have stated that that is not going to happen and they are going to spend the money on other things. Quite what that will be will be interesting.

The thing that gets my hackles up with Sky is that there is a price increase every year. Sure they add channels (if you count the Jones's) but there should be a corresponding decrease in price if there is a loss of content.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

That is good in theory about a price drop but realistically as the sports is a bundled package and the price is calculated on all rights costs and that different people watch different things and in varying degrees across a month or year it would be very hard to determine what savings a person should get and how much is dependent on what they watched before. If say I had SKY sports and never watched the EPL should I be entitled to a reduced package cost? And if they did reduce then the saving might be something in a range of 50cents to a dollar a week.

I guess the point I was trying to make (badly) was that a UK subscriber who (might, just maybe, hypothetically) wants a cheaper way to watch football in the UK may (just maybe, hypothetically) find New Zealand pricing attractive and look for a way to circumvent any geolocation restrictions and subscribe to a New Zealand, rather than UK feed. It's happened before. More than once.

This is one of the downsides of essentially pocket pricing - charging different amounts in different areas based on willingness/ability to pay. Paul Brislen's model of direct retailing by the rights holder would ultimately address this.

Indeed. We could be facing the odd situation where people from overseas are actually looking to circumvent geo blocking technologies to access content in New Zealand.

Not for a while, if ever. Sky currently hold those rights and are running around at the moment telling media that A-League games get more viewers than EPL ones, so I can't see sky looking to lose those anytime soon.

well if premierleaguepass get enough subscribers then maybe they will go after the A-league as well, they seem to be indicating the Italian, French and US are within grasp. So after the current a league contract is done who knows.

I'm happy enough to ditch Sky for this, i know i can get a decent enough stream for the champions league games which are at a live watchable time (not that my team are in it but hey) My only concern really is the world cup next year, don't want to miss that and i'd guess Sky would be favorites to land it..

One key difference is the A-league games in NZ are filmed by Sky under the current arrangement. There are other options but if everything else is the same FFA would have to subcontract to someone different here which may cost more.
