The quality of using PLP via iPad/AppleTV/Airplay to my LCD TV has dropped dramatically since Xmas, to the point it has become unwatchable. My method of watching games has gone from 'rock-solid' to 'deplorable', and forced me to watch games on my PC. Something appears to have changed with the streaming technology as now the stream has extreme difficulty buffering, drops out completely with alarming regularity, and the 'network bandwidth' message comes up every 2-5 minutes.

Whilst I understand that using wi-fi can be a problem, especially if there are multiple wifi connected devices in the house, I have tried turning all other devices off, (airplane mode), and this does not improve the situation.

If you look back at my posts in this thread over the past 3 years you will see that I was one of the rare individuals that was happy with a iPad/AppleTV/Airplay solution, but for some unknown reason it has turned to cr*p in the past few months.

I wouldn't say that the reason is unknown. PLP have lost the rights for the next three years so they'll be cutting every possible cost they can, including bandwidth and support wages.

It hasn't been confirmed that they have lost the rights yet though has it?

The marketing manager for Sky TV told Tony Veitch that Bein sports had won the rights for all of Australasia. She was of the opinion that they would on-sell the rights for NZ and she intimated that Sky were in a good position to get them. Fingers crossed...

Haven't seen many streams at all, bar the games that are shown live on Sky Sport in the UK.. the bit of championship action I've watched has been via a VPN to the channel 5 website who do a decent highlights program ala match of the day on the Saturday night.

Thanks for that Ellwood . . . although I'll remain hopeful (if somewhat dubious) that 25+ points is achievable in Villa's final 14 games.

You are quite right, Optus do have the rights. Maybe my recall of the conversation is not accurate. She did mention that Sky had bought the CL rights off Bein, so maybe she suggested that they would do so again with EPL?

I have seen other reports that Bein won the rights in NZ.

I've not had any issues with PLP at all; my streams on Orcon UFB have been rock solid.

I'd be gutted if Sky got the rights; I like the $200 price point for PLP. Sky would doubtless try and tie me into a bundled deal with the rest of their content and make me pay 3 or 4 times as much.

Starsports via VPN then......

Ouch. SMH is reporting that Optus is estimated to need 80,000 customers at $80/season to break even. And Telstra doesnt have 80,000 subs for NFL (@ $90/season) and AFL (@ $90/season).

Not really a like for like with the NRL or AFL as both of those are a tack on service not an exclusive service. The interesting thing about the NRL (not sure about AFL) is that subscription only lets you view the games on the same size as the device (can only be phones and tablets) it is registered to. If you have a 7inch screen and send to a 50 inch TV you only get 7 inch of the TV screen filled. I think it also doesn't allow some games to be viewed live either

Not sure what you mean by tack-on service vs exclusive. If I want to stream the NRL and I dont want Foxtel then I pay $3/wk to do so. And not exclusive to Telstra as a mobile subscriber. Sounds like Optus is going down the same path. I recall that the non-live games are the FTA exclusives - ie not pay. Will be interesting given the change in digital rights that Telstra has paid for cf previous rights. And the much higher price.

I was surprised at the low take up though. 26million people, low paytv penetration and a reluctance to pay big-bundle plus sport to get it. Drop foxtel, pay $3/wk (thats 40c a game if you watch all of them, or a cup of coffee if only watch one game). But no-one wants it? Odd.
