automaton: Am I correct in assuming that this New Zealand version also comes baked with Google US DNS?  So no iPlay through VPN (without router configuration)?

yes they all do

they fixed the "issue" that let these be rooted

Thanks.  Fairly limited usefulness in NZ then, beyond being a good YouTube streamer.

Yes, those too.  However for me, I don't need to stream Pandora, and I tried Quickflix and found it didn't hit the spot.

It'll work with the Kiwi Netflix when it kicks off in March. Of course, we will have to wait & see what their catalogue is like...

Does it/ will it stream Lightbox from either Android App or browser?

Hopefully the team at Lightbox saw it coming and have been developing for it.

In theory you can throw anything in a browser tab onto the Chromecast. In practice, when we tried TVNZ ondemand, it was laggy and glitch and not watchable, but may have been due to our wifi.

I would be very likely to sign up with Lightbox if it does.

Works fine with my setup for Sky on Demand.

It's also great for streaming my Plex content to anywhere with a decent internet connection.

Yeah, I suspect a wifi thing, the ondemand content streams fine on the PC, but when we cast it both on the PC and the Cast it glitched up. Probably if the PC was wired instead of wifi, there would be less problem - the content is streaming down to the PC over wifi, then back off the PC through the wifi router then down to the Chromecast over the same wifi. And if there's a kid in the house, then odds are there's Youtube being streamed to a lappie or phone in another room at the same time.

My experience with Chromecast/Lightbox is that the website casts just fine, but as soon as you start a video stream, the screen goes black.

That'll be the copy protection getting in the way (that's what copy protection does best!)

You can adjust the video quality down on the chromecast settings for video streaming. On lowest quality, mine streams with minimal lag. Not ideal. but great as a fall back. I've used it quite successfully with watching old NZ TV from nzonscreen.com

Chromecast is great for youtube, but also works well with google photos as well. If you have a newer phone, the option to mirror your phone screen is handy. I have a Sony Z2 and Google recently added support for this.

Seriously, though, at the price of one friday night's takeaways for the familiy, it's a absolute no-brainer. Outstanding value for money.
