ROFL. Public opinion is not law... If he claimed the law was behind them, yeah, sure.

I'm sure he does have quite a bit of public support, from everybody who thinks Sky charges too much, from everybody who doesn't see anything wrong with pirating content,and from eveybody who bought a My BOX. Unfortunately, no matter how many people don't like my neighbour, doesn't make it legal for me to power my house from an extension cord snuck into his meter box in the middle of the night...

I think he is a very young snake. Who in their right mind would sell a product that gives free access to a pay tv service, let alone Sky. A potential purchaser probably called Sky to confirm its all legit, then it hit the fan.

But also I'm not sure limited liability will cover what is essentially fraud.

Limited Liability protects the shareholders who can only be liable for the value of the shares. Directors run the company for the shareholders, but they are liable for negligence if negligence was proven. Fraud would have to be the epitome of negligence.

But if I understand his argument correctly, he is/will say that he is only providing the 'extension chord' and he is not responsible for how people choose to use it. I think he has shot himself in the foot though as he has gone a step further and actually promoted the *illegal* use. Using the extension chord analogy, he promoted that the chord is sold for the purpose of stealing electricity from the Neighbour, and included instruction on how to actually do that. As much as a 'public champion against corporate greed' he may be, I think legally he has a big problem. Lots of other sellers like on Facebook so imagine Sky are looking to make an example of him. They will go for broke.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I'm conflicted.

Part of me wants to see him get totally bent over, because I'm just not at all onboard with profiting from piracy.

However I'm worried that it will set a legal precedent around kodi and streaming, and I'm not at all okay with that because I think it's perfectly acceptable (indeed I applaud and encourage) breaching copyright for non commercial reasons. If people want to setup kodi boxes and use streaming plugins themselves that should be 100% legal.

True, the counter argument of that is, how many of those customers would have bought Sky if they didn't have access to that box.

But then he is even thicker and sells a "premium channels" pack for $25 - might not be Sky but that is literally selling piracy.

Honestly my issue is not the piracy, but the fact this poor excuse of a human is promoting this is a "totally legit" product - IT'S NOT EVEN HIS SOFTWARE!

It's still piracy. That will always be illegal. But really, what's the first rule of fight club? Stick to that and things will be fine for years to come.

He's now claiming he's sold 8000 boxes.

I suspect that figure is probably highly inflated - and maybe these sellers will regret trying to inflate sales figures when damages are awarded based on the number sold!

And this is another issue, sure people been doing it for for years and years (i'm not going to get into the whole, it should not be legal as you don't have the rights etc speech). This guy has "stuffed" it for everyone to make money for himself and be damned anyone else. If/When sky (or any other company that has rights for NZ) wins it will put focus on these TV boxes and other devices that can be used in this way (raspberry pi devices etc). If this kicks up to much then it could go the way of the UK and these devices (which can be used for other legal functions) end up getting banned and blocked from importing.
