Unfortunately my car doesn't have internet access. FM radio still has a big future in the country despite what millennials think.

I just read the RNZ article and I have no problem with broadening the appeal to a younger non-European audience. That fits with RNZ's mandate. But not by exiling classical music to mono low-fi AM. This is such a dumb backward idea it is hard to take seriously. Is RNZ being run by monkeys now?

As someone who has often been called a monkey I am shocked that such negative views of the Simian order are held in this day and age. I hope that such comments will not sully these pages again and I feel I must warn you that any further comments of such a nature may lead to a mass banana skinning of your place of residence.

for the consumer local content Radio is cheap and easy to use, what do you propose replacing it with.....

And like a good percentage of the country, my Japanese import can't really be described as having FM radio access either. 😃

Internet radios are cheap and easy to use for listening in the home.

As are Echo and Google Home devices.

Plus Sonos (not cheap but one out of two) and/or the other numerous connected speaker options.

Not to mention phone apps, given that almost everyone has a phone.

None of which requires fresh infrastructure such as a DAB+ network, although that could be an option as well.

IMO they should have moved National to AM as it is all talk and left Concert on FM. Making the 101FM into "Music 101" a brand they already use on National.

As someone who listens exclusively to RNZ National, and exclusively on AM, I think this is an excellent idea.
It's certainly a better idea than putting Concert on AM

Well if they want to save it, there only real option is to get Winston to go into bat for them....

But I seriously can't see Winston bringing down the Government over Concert FM....

The politicians showed what little regard they had for radio years ago when they bulldozed Broadcasting House to clear the way for an extension to the Beehive that never went ahead. Concert not being in Auckland sealed its fate.

Among all radio stations in New Zealand, RNZ National's station share of 11.2%.

The weekly cumulative audience for RNZ Concert is 173,300 or 4.0% of the 10+ population.

Basic mathematics would appear to suggest that the right station is getting bumped.

EDIT:

Reading that again, I'm not convinced that a "station share of 11.2%" and "a weekly cumulative audience of 4.0% of the 10+ population" is comparing the same thing. Looks like creative stats to make Concert's share look bigger than it is.

That's a real backwards move as AM has a terrible bandwidth and no stereo sound.

It could have stereo AM if they had deployed it when it was a thing in the 80s, but lets face it, broadcast is dead and their listeners are probably mostly gone by now.

But launching a youth FM station? Lol, not like they even have radios anymore. The streaming is all they need.

Concert FM - a niche program - has now been set up to fail - downgraded to mono AM, with no announcers.

This is roughly equivalent to producing a new TV series in black and white with a lo-res 4x3 aspect ratio screen.

My guess is that it will be closed down after another one or two years, after an inevitable decline in its already low ratings.

My background:

I am old.
I have loved classical music since I was 12 years old.
In my youth, I compiled and presented a classical music program on student radio.
I have been a hi-fi fanatic since I was 15 years old, when I started building my own audio equipment.
I now have a large (15TB) collection of studio masters of classical music (mostly in FLAC 24/96 format).
I have not listened to AM radio for at least 20 years. The sound quality is awful (even if you prefer mono).

Certainly video broadcasting is in difficulty, but from what I’ve read the imminent death of radio is greatly exaggerated. Have a listen to last Sunday’s MediaWatch on NatRad, where this exact topic was covered.

Radio's death was predicted when TV first emerged. Radio has its own unique value and it will always persist in one form or another. There are many situations where listening is preferable to watching, such as when driving a car.

Which spotify or podcasts also deliver, with content that you want rather than whatever is chosen to target the masses.

Was involved in the test trials from Eureka, but honestly for a Hi Fidelity channel such as CFM it was never going to be a runner.
