Not sure if this is the right sub forum, but anyway, surely this report is wrong, how can they kill off Concert FM and only keep AM, someone needs a reset.

Edit, reading the article fully it seems it is another STUFF blunder, and the AM services is being dropped.

Yeah, I read the same article with alarm and confusion, so I hope it is indeed a classic Stuff-up (get it?!)

It does indeed claim the plan is to remove CFM from FM:

Sources said the changes would see almost all jobs at Concert go, with the station moved from FM to AM with no presenters.

That's quite bizarre given it also states CFM is to continue to record and broadcast concerts - that stunning hi-fidelity sound that only AM can provide will do wonders for these broadcasts (and IIRC, their live recording work is held in pretty high regard?).

Nope. Speculation in recent weeks has been concert moving to FM only and the new music station replacing them on their FM frequency.

No, Its true, they are kicking Concert off the FM frequency so they can create a "yuff" radio station, I imagine in the mould of JJJ in OZ,

Hi, well Tom the stuff contibutor (who is well known around here) tells me that the move to AM is what is intended, yet the article says the opposite toward the end, I have asked he gets it clarified, moving back to AM takes us back 80yrs

So had it confirmed that the intended plan (still to be decided) is to release a new Youth oriented channel on FM and move CFM back to last century, guess it will become CAM

I can hear a "Save our CFM" campain coming on already

That's a real backwards move as AM has a terrible  bandwidth and no stereo sound.

Initial, un-thought out reaction is, send Classical music to AM, so that the people who tend to like that kind of stuff, dare I say older and with actual money, won't listen to the lo-fi thus produced, and the yoof, who are probably already half deaf from going to concerts and likely to be skint, get the hifi music/noise.

I believe Concert will still be on iHeartRadio and Sky so there is still an option to hear it crystal clear

Well if they go to AM with a streaming option I really hope they up the fidelity compared to what is currently broadcast, something akin to Deezer comes to mind.

You can hear the rattle of walking sticks, zimmer frames and false teeth. The argument will outlast the audience.

^ Great to see all the stereotypes being rolled out...

But I thought this was a classic headline on the story on RNZ's own site:

RNZ guts Concert radio as it plans appeal to youth

Specific dates are given: "RNZ Concert would be taken off FM radio on May 29 and the youth platform would be phased in ahead of its full launch on August 28."

The article, from Mediawatch, includes a link to an interview with the CE about the move.

Here is RNZ own spin on the news

IMO they should have moved National to AM as it is all talk and left Concert on FM. Making the 101FM into "Music 101" a brand they already use on National.

Well if they want to save it, there only real option is to get Winston to go into bat for them....

But I seriously can't see Winston bringing down the Government over Concert FM....

Why not just shut down the whole FM band and make better use of that spectrum?

It's space year 2020. Other delivery mechanisms exist for linear audio. 😁

This has got to be one of the dumber things they have ever contemplated. I thought public broadcasting was supposed to be getting a boost, not buried in concrete.

I just read the RNZ article and I have no problem with broadening the appeal to a younger non-European audience. That fits with RNZ's mandate. But not by exiling classical music to mono low-fi AM. This is such a dumb backward idea it is hard to take seriously. Is RNZ being run by monkeys now?
