nigelj: (fwiw, it does seem Spotify is around the corner, as they have recently(?) created SpotifyNZ/SpotifyAU twitter accounts)
BraaiGuy:reven:
the thing that sucks about netflix is its silverlight and doesnt work on linux, but they are working on a linux player (as a developer i would use silverlight over flash, but cuts out linux community)
Netflix runs on Tivo in the States. Tivo = Linux
BraaiGuy: Its available on my PS3. Why can't I get it on my Sony TV?
Simularily for TV3 on demand, but thats only available on a PC - Whats the point.
NonprayingMantis:freitasm:NonprayingMantis: looking at what they do in Ozzie, I see they have apps loaded onto Sony and Samsung Devices including connected TVs, PS3s, tablets etc. that pretty much covers off a large proportion of the market.
If they partner with Telstraclear (with the T-Box and cable set top box) or Telecom (with the TiVo) then they could potentially load apps onto their devices I presume.
Not sure what their library for Nz will look like though. Will they be able to get access to the good content, or does sky have it all locked up? If the only shows are old then I won't bother, but if there is some good stuff (SoHo type stuff) then I will definitely get rid of my multiroom, and possibly Sky altogether.
Telecom and TiVo? Surely you are not suggesting giving those two a second chance of a marriage?
haha, well who knows. I have no idea if it is techincally possible, but TiVo had a media streaming capability via Caspa, and Telecom have been giving the things away for a while now - maybe they are doing it to get a good enough scale to launch quickflix? (or maybe I am reading too much into it)

davidcole: Yes, but change:
Set Top Box/PVR like TiVo, say under $500.
To application on Boxee/Tivo/Apple TV/Samsung TVs/Sony Tvs/LG TVs/Roku + smart phone/tablet apps. - you know, like all the big players.....
crackrdbycracku: Best case would be:
Set Top Box/PVR like TiVo, say under $500.
+
All you can eat Netflix/QuickFlix, with DVD store range of content, on a monthly subscription.
+
Broadband bundle, say with different rates for 20GB, 40GB, 60GB etc.
=
A monthly price not stupidly more than Sky + MySky + movies + SoHo, so starting at around $80 a month, for the 20GB version.
I think this is doable, anybody agree?
reven:People complain when there's no option for legal content sourcing, then complain when there's...
My point is that pirates will keep pirating, regardless. It would be wonderful if that was not the case, but sorry, it's how it works. Free trumps paid.
but a lot of people have been pirating stuff over the years because its the easiest way to get the content they want in the format they want.
i know this person, not me someone else, who doesnt want blurays, or dvds, or DRMed SD movies from itunes but wants to watch any movie/tv show on any device connect to tvs.
in the past the easiest way was only the illegal way. so there was little choice. now this person has completely stopped doing that (seriously not me) and is paying for services such as netflix, hulu etc and is happy to do so.
what he wants is a thin client connect to a tv, that he can hide from the tv and can easily stream legally from online services or watch a collection of his own movies/tv that have been ripped from dvds/bluray (i think thats legal now... isnt it?). and now you can (well you're breaking netflix/hulus terms of service, but thats not exactly illegal) and you're paying for it.
if there was in a service just as good as netflix in nz that worked on the devices he wants and cost relatively the same, he would sign up to nz service.

If it's:
1: easy
2: fast
3: cheapish
4: has the stuff I want to see/hear
and
5: DRM free so I can keep the show indefinitely, I can put it on any device I so choose, and I can user whatever operating system I so desire
then I would gladly pay to officially download media.
There are no available solutions that provide all 5.
