BraaiGuy: Just received an email from playstation advertising quickflix, and how to install it on PS3

What did it say - Quickflix isn't appearing on my PS3 and I have the latest update.

I tested it last night. Works OK, but quality not nearly as good as Bravia. Here is a copy of the email. Navigate to "TV/Services" icon on PS3 and install it from there.

Why did they they charge me 1c on the day I signed up? Its supposed to be free.

To verify you have given a real card, I believe that it is easier to do that and requires less explanation to debit card users than a hold on the amount for the sub payment.

I just searched the "help" part of their system and its explained. Its not very clear regarding this and is in the middle of their T&C as well.

I've never had a company do this before :-(

Once the validation has been confirmed, the amount is refunded to the same card. This normally takes 5-10 business days."

OK.. yes its a way to find out if its a valid credit card but as I've said I've seen no one do it in NZ before

It's actually a very common practice and I can be pretty certain that you have had it happen before however most CC companies would not show this on your statement as it as mentioned above is generally reversed within a few days and known to be only for verifying the validity of your card.

Trademe do something very similar when the you setup a Paynow account. Admittedly they deposit 1c rather than debit it but it's a similar concept.

Except that Visa have been trying to get merchants to cut it out for years now. You're supposed to complete a $0.00 charge if you want to validate a card. Last I saw they'd reached the point they were threatening fines (called the "Misuse of Authorisation Fee") for continuing with $0.01 charges to validate cards.
